no marmotte the Allergies did not have anything to do with his hand injuries.
allergies was around 1982, the problems with his hand soon after his first solo album.

btw. i am not sure if he still has a these problems today, i think the last time he talked about that was in the early 80s. however he said this will never heal... but maybe medicine has found new ways in the last 25 years.
but in general simon is known as a good songwriter, then singer, and at least guitar player IMO. There are people who can play ways better (mark, vincent, ray, barney) and as a perfectionist i think paul will not like his own playing that much when he knows that one of them could do it much better. he is focusing on the whole sound arrangement and the lyrics and his voice.

Often at live concert i have the feeling he only plays the guitar to live that rock-musician-feeling. he strums on a guitar but you can not even hear it on some songs. And when he really plays he is very concentrated, he looks down to the strings nearly all the time when playing songs like Old Friends. (when picking the right string is important). Ok also santana is always looking onto his fingers, or brian may...but you have the feeling they could play their fast and much much more complex things blind, while simon has some hard times with his slower songs.

For me he is not a guitar player, that was just a coincidence. He could aso have learned playing the piano and compose all his songs on it (not just a hand full) like Billy Joel for example. As he sang in Darling Lorraine: I Love the piano...

ok enough :-)

A couple of years ago there was something on the net about Paul being in hospital getting an operation on his hand - he had carpel tunnel syndrome. this is a repetitive strain injury that tennis players and guitarists are susceptible to.

well...i know there are many other guitarplayers which are much better(faster).but paul plays a really nice acoustic guitar in a fine style.when he plays with his band, he plays sometimes much easier.but listen to his solo-performance...you know...Hearts And Bones, surfer girl,Kodachrome from the 1984 solotour etc.he´s not a fast player.but for me fast is not always good...and eric clapton for me is not better...

Come on Björn ! you cant´t say that Paul plays better guitar than Clapton ! Paul uses his guitar to sing, and plays very well (I wish I could paly 20% as he does), but he is not part of those monsters who can talk and show their soul with their guitar, not always fast... Clapton is ! Listen to his unplugged album to compare acoustic guitar, and you´ll see the difference.
I´m not a fan of sport-music performences neither but sorry : I had to react to your post.

Some facts:

Paul`s parents (his father was professional musician, his grandfather Cantor (jewish singer in church) in Hungary, his mother teached music for a while in school) first tried to teach him piano, but it did not work. So he got a guitar, his younger brother Eddie plays piano much better.

He had a calcium deposit in one finger I think about after his first solo-tour 1973/74, where he was the only acoustic guitar player. It was never completely healed, but got much better.

He also had that carpal-tunnel surgery, also not dangerous, but painful. Willie Nelson stopped a concert tour because of this in the middle of a concert.

But the reason he used other guitarists more and more is according to his own words as Bodo stated: They are better.

His taste is clearly not playing fast or having a good technique. He described this young black bass-player (Amand Leco Seco or so) on his tour 1991/92 as very fast. You can see it in Concert In The Park 1991. But probably he also meant: he is reliable, but not very sensitive.

So he prefered Baghiti Kumalo (or the famous Anthony Jackson before on Hearts And Bones).

Before working with Ray Phiri, Vincent Nguini and Mark Stewart he prefered guitarists coming from jazz, they are able to improvise and have a better musical feeling.

What the late Eric Gale (Simon: "the best guitarist in the US") did in the concerts 1n 1980 (see the tower concert), is not very difficult - he mostly uses one or two strings.

Some opinions:

Simon himself did great jobs recently with "Surfer Girl" and "Crazy".

And for me the best song on S & G`s Greatest Hits 1972 is "For Emily..." Great vocals from Garfunkel and great guitar-playing by Simon.

He is great at breaking new grounds, but also at seeing what he cannot do or should not do.

The best Rock-guitarist for me is clearly Mark Knopfler.

Mark Knopfler is great - I wish he would do more rock n roll in the last years. He became something like a blues or country musician...

I think Paul´s style of guitar playing is very different from, say Eric Clapton et al; and is difficult to compare really. I think they´re both great in different ways.

I don´t think that PS should do just acoustic, but maybe a relaxed kind of album between projects would be cool?

I liked the idea of making children songs album together with Edie Brickell. (Wherever that idea came from) Where he records just a few well known songs in his own way. This could be done very fast.

I would Love it if Paul did an acoustic album . . . I´ve always been in awe of his ability to really capture your attention with just his voice and guitar alone. Very few performers have that gift now-a-days (well, very few of them actually play an instrument decently to begin with, sadly enough!), and I think it would be a really nice change of pace for him. It would be nice to hear Paul return to a more acoustic approach to his music.

I would really like an acoustic album! And it would be a great way to return to one´s roots again. (But hopefully he doesn´t come to an end of his career too soon!)
Also, I would like an children´s songs album with Edie Brickell.
