From the Surprise album:

"I remember once in august 1983
I was wrong, and I could be wrong again
I remember one of my best friends turned enemy
So, I was wrong, and I could be wrong again"

I think this a definite reference to Garfunkel.
It was about that time they split up a second time and Simon deleted the vocals that AG had recorded and released Hearts & Bones as a solo album

Except I think he sings "1993" not "1983".

He does sing 1993 and also in the lyrics book as 1993. They did have a serious fall out in 1993 too though until 2003.

Yes, of course he sang "1993", but as already said, it fits anyway!

Guess where I copied the lyrics? On the official Paul Simon page...

I have always thought the line referred to Art. Surely Paul did not fall out with another friend around that time !

Ha, thank you Hakan!
That is the next number Paul just changed, so it fits better to the melody and is easier to sing. I am really surprised he is changing facts so easely. Of course it is much nicer to sing ninety ninety three than ninety eigthy three, the "ei" destroys everything.

Also police room six one nine in Biko was changed to 369, seems he does not like to sing the "o". Another option would have been six-three-nine..but maybe it sounds too much like sixty-nine.

Oh, we have to find out a lot of real meanings of all the lyrics now.

Just imagine:

Maybe it was already 5AM im the morning?

Wasn't it three lovers playing the game?

Did it took him eleven days to hitchicke from Saginaw?

I also think Paul started to think too much, when he was eleven

And they got a wall in China, thats a thirteenthousand miles long (get your facts right Pauli, also two times two four.

And we all know Paul only could think about 47 ways to leave your lover.

Big end: I am sure there were only one-hundred-twenty people, maybe less!

Do you know about more wrong facts in Pauls songs?

Paul could well have been referring to August 1983 as that was when he married Carrie. He had rang Art a couple of days before and told him he had wiped his vocals from the album and by the way Carrie and I are getting married ,would you like to come to the wedding! Also they fell out in 1993 too so maybe he combined both events as 1993 definitely flows better. Don't know about the next line though! Don't think he ever thought he was wrong ! Ha Ha !

My travelling companion is 9 years old. That would make it around 1981. There is the 9 again! Though his son never did accompany Paul on the trip.

I would call this a poetic license...

"The first time I heard 'Peggy Sue'
I was twelve years old"

Buddy Holly's Peggy Sue was released September 20, 1957.
Then Paul Simon was just three weeks from celebrate his 16th birthday...

Maybe Paul is not so hot on math! "I was wrong and I could be wrong again" could be one of his little jokes he says he puts in every song.

Good one Hakan, and again, twelve fits much better than six-teen.
