| Hi
I have a question, does anybody know if Old 78rpm shellacs of Paul Simon/Tom and Jerry/Landis (from the 50´s) exist? (not 45rpm singles)

| Thanks Jeanette, you definately had the better search phrases than me :-)
Well, Hey Schoolgirl seems to be the only 78rpm LP, does anyone have this one? |

| Interesting. Hey Schoolgirl is certainly mono. Stereo sound was invented in the 50`s, but only classical music was "worth" to be recorded this way. In the 60`s many singles still appeared in mono.
Wednesday morning 3.a.m. is stereo, but they were so fascinated about this new thing that Garfunkel is singing from one side and Simon from the other.
I often blended out Garfunkel...
Today it is clear that a natural sound is something different than just separating voices and instruments.
But two channels are ok, five are definitely not nessecary because you don`t have five ears and music from the back as reflection is bad instead of good. The best sound is reached in theatres like the Old greeks showed us, without microphones. |

| I remember my parents had such records. 78 rpm gives better quality and a more constant running. But the speed was so high that the diameter was limited which reduced running time further.
I often played 45-singles with the speed of 33 and 78. When my parents were not home...
Running a 33 LP with 78 destroys the record immediately. But only at one point...
Very funny sound. The 78 gives a sound like the Bee Gee`s imitation in Paul Simon`s Special 1978.
So at that time I was more seeing than hearing music and our machine was destroyed from time to time.
It was a cupboard, which could be closed and looked not like technique at all. Flowers on it etc. All in one: black/white-TV, mono speaker, amplifier, pre-amplifier, tuner, record player. Was always repaired at home.
With the first tape recorder I tested its power. I took an Old tape and fixed something at the beginning. Then let it fall downstairs and the machine wind it up again. Mechanical things are much more interesting than electronics! |
