When the sounds of silence threatened to delay his show for an hour or more Sunday night, singer-songwriter Paul Simon put on an impromptu preshow in the atrium lobby of the Civic Center Music Hall so his fans wouldn´t be kept waiting.

Problems arose when a processor that runs Simon´s sound board failed, according to a news release. As crews backstage worked to fix the issue and transfer Simon´s sound programs to the Civic Center´s house board, a bigger question arose, what to do with the 2,500 fans already seated to see Simon play?
Simon came up with the solution himself. According to Civic Center Events Manager Richard Charnay, the audience was escorted back out to the lobby where Simon, his band, plus members of opening act the Punch Brothers, were ready and waiting to greet fans with an acoustic set, complete with Simon and Garfunkel favorites and a few collaborative offerings. More than 2,000 patrons stood in the atrium lobby on all levels of the performance hall to watch the impromptu show.
After the lobby show, Simon thanked the crowd for its patience and told them he´d see them back inside.
At 8:30 p.m., one hour after the original start time, the Punch Brothers, then Simon took to the stage and put on a full set that lasted until almost 11 p.m.
