Bette Midler hosted her annuala gala to benefit the New York Restoration Project on October 29 this year at the Waldorf-Astoria in NY. Guests included John Kerry, John McEnroe & Patty Smyth.

Paul sang a small accoustic set including many S&G hits. He started with Loves me like a rock which he dedicated to John Kerry. He changed the lyrics to: If I was the Senator of Massachusetts.
In the end Bette Midler joined him for singin The Boxer.

Behind this story is maybe more than what it might look like. Paul recorded the song ´Gone at last´ together with Bette Midler in 1975. But when the album was released, Bette´s vocals got replaced by Phoebe Snow´s. Bette said she never knew the reason why, Paul said it was an artistical decission. Some sources say that Paul and Bette had a very close relationship in 1975, and when the relationship went sour, Paul took Bette off the track out of spite.

So Paul and Bette might have overcome their problems after many years, and decided to do a duet on The Boxer this night.
