from http://www.playbillarts.com/news/article/2564.html Saxophonist Michael Brecker, who is suffering from the blood disorder myelodyspastic syndrome (MDS), needs a bone-marrow transplant, according to an email message from his wife, Susan Brecker, posted on the Internet bulletin board All About Jazz. Susan Brecker writes, ´The initial search for a donor (including Michael´s sibling and childen) has not yet resulted in a suitable match. Michael´s doctors have told us that we need to immediately explore all possible options. This involves getting as many people of a similar genetic background to be tested.´ People of Eastern European Jewish descent are most likely to produce a match. The transplant procedure is not surgical for the donor, according to the email: stem cells are gathered from the donor´s blood. Donor center locations can be found at http://www.marrow.org. Brecker´s management can be reached at [email protected].
