 | sorry for the delay. things are getting crazy. i am getting married next sunday, the 26th and it is making me a very busy man.
okay, so now we are at one of my least favorite Paul Simon albums. One Trick Pony is an album that i could bring myself to listen to very many times. it seems as though he wrote the entire album as the character in the movie, Jonah, so it never felt like a paul simon album to me. it doesnt have the depth that is normally there and is the reason that i listen to pauls music.
again, i havent listened to the album too many times so maybe i need to give it a few more chances, but this is my opinion as of today and it has been for a couple years now.
im sure that there a couple of people on these boards that actually enjoy this album and i would Love to hear why.
Track Listing:
Late In The Evening
That´s Why God Made The Movies
One Trick Pony
How The Heart Approaches What It Yearns
Oh, Marion
Ace In The Hole
Nobody
Jonah
God bless the Absentee
Long, Long Day |

 | I don´t have this album but I´ve seen the movie and generally like the soundtrack. I plan to buy this album sometime within the next few months, though. |

 | This is one of Paul´s top 3 albums on my list.
Every song fit´s perfect to the next one, it´s the album with the most input from Richard Tee. - And Steve Gadd and Tony Levin (touring with Peter Gabriel now)
It´s the era when Paul was wearing some black leather and began to relax during concerts.
They say Jonah, he was swallowed by a whale, but I say there?s no truth to that tale - I know Jonah
he was swallowed by a song.
- That are deep lyrics IMO.

 | First of all, have a happy marriage!!! About the album, I like it very, very much. The album swings and has very good lyrics in it (i think). The album is a story that perfectly fits, with Late In The Evening as the first track and Long long day as the last one. For me, I agree with Bodo, one of my top 3 albums! |

 | Just married!!!
"Late In The Evening" is now a Paul´s classic and always a great moment during concerts..."Ace In The Hole" is also a very good "concert" song, it´s a pity that Paul never sings it, well, i know, he misses Richard Tee... |

 | Yeah, many great unknown songs in that album and Paul looked so at ease on stage at that time and so "rocky" !
I always Love to listen to OTP again and again (haaaaa !! And his voice´s so sexy on "Nobody" !... ;-) ) |

 | Congratuliations.
I hold with the others here, it is indeed a top album, I wish he would play some of these songs in concert again like How The Heart Approaches What It Yearns, or Jonah and of course Ace In The Hole, great songs, great lyrics although Paul said the lyrics from Jonah don´t fitt the melody, it should have been a Love song. |

 | watch paul (& Richard Tee) sing some of these songs on the Tower DVD then go back to the album - powerful stuff. and as someone else said here real rocky. Have a great day. hope at least one of the songs will be a PS one - but not slip slidding away :) |

 | thank you everyone. it is going to be a great day. we have been together for 5 years and we are really happy with the foundation that we have laid to build so many years on top of.
of course, i had to include paul in on this day of our lives. :^) she and her dad are dancing to ´Father and Daughter´. what a beautiful song!
now that i have read so many great reviews of this album i will listen to it again. im sure that i was just missing the point or whatever. i look forward to discovering more.

 | One-Trick Pony...humm !
Well, it countains my favourite song of Paul, Late In The Evening, which I especially like performed live. Others have a really great groove (title song, Ace In The Hole). Can we say that this is the most Rock n´ Roll album of Paul ?
Jonah is great. Also, do you remember this picture of Paul sitting on a bed or playing the guitar close to a window ? Each time I see it, I am thinking: he is signing Long Long Day. I like the comment about the fact that it is a great night album in a car ! Sure, it is !
But on the whole, I would say that I like the album cause I am a fan and I listen to it 75 times. For the average people, it is certainly not a must-have. Except for Late in the evening, the other songs are easily forgettable !
Also, contrary to the first 3 solo LP´s, this one can sound really dated !
I am looking forward to seing the debate about Hearts and ones ! I know that some people will say that it is a masterpiece. |

 | I Love both One Trick Pony and Hearts And Bones. I wouldn´t say that Hearts and Bones is a masterpiece, but it DOES have some amazing songs on it IMO. I especially love the title song. As a guitarist myself, it is a work of art on the guitar. If you have ever seen Paul play it on, "The Concert In The Park" dvd, then you know what I mean. |

 | I think this is my favourite album at the moment.
Late In The Evening and Ace In The Hole are perfect songs (in my all time top 20 of Paul´s songs). I never get tired of listening to them.
The slower numbers like That´s Why God Made The Movies, How The Heart Approaches What It Yearns, Nobody, Jonah and Long Long Day work perfectly between the faster tunes.
Paul´s singing is great especially in Ace The Hole and Nobody.
One-Trick Pony, God Bless The Absentee and Oh Marion are the songs I first fell in Love with but they sound a bit dated now.
I like the fact that Paul has a proper band now. Steve Gadd is of course my all time favourite drummer and Ralph McDonald, Tony Levin & Eric Gale are great.
The lyrics are great as always.
It´s of course a matter of taste but I really love this album.
A shame that he doesn´t perform these songs (other than Late In The Evening) in concert.

 | In the view of critics it is surely the weakest Paul-Simon-Album. He especially was attacked being not very inventive in the 5 years since "Still crazy" and fairly near to the normal Elton-John or Paul-Mccartney "MOR" (Middle of the road")- stuff of those days.
I like many of the songs, but some arrangements (with this small basic musician-troup) with electric-piano etc. are too lush. See "God bless the absentee", "That`s why god made the movies", "Long long day" and "Jonah".
Live they are much better. (But he never played the first two, I guess).
Patrick Humphries, Fan and Biograph, wrote: "this album breaks little new ground for Simon, which is a shame, since he has proved to be one of Rock`s more adventurous explorers. But it remarks the return of a great talent after too long away, for which we should be grateful".
My favourites are "Oh Marion","How the heart...", "Nobody", "Late In The Evening" (His latest Top Ten-Hit in the USA. In England, "You can call me AL" is the latest). |
