Last summer Simon & Garfunkel postponed their North American tour indefinitely when Art Garfunkel was diagnosed with vocal cord paresis. But Friday the singer told Rolling Stone exclusively that he´s on the mend and hopes to reschedule the dates next summer. ´My voice is coming back slowly, too slowly,´ he said. ´In my bones I feel healthy. I know it´s coming back. I just have to be patient.´
Two and a half months ago Garfunkel quit smoking to help his voice recover. ´Two weeks ago my doctor put a camera down my nose into my throat,´ he said. ´He said ´I really like what I see. You´re in good shape, basically. All the apparatus is right. You will definitely be a singer and just fine again. You just have to have patience. You just irritated it with the heat of smoking until two and a half months ago.´´

As of now Garfunkel has pulled all solo and Simon & Garfunkel dates, but in the spring he plans to be begin rehearsing again. ´That means that our tour of last summer will have taken a one year pause,´ he said. ´Think of me like Jimmy Rollins of the Philadelphia Phillies. In print I saw him say, ´I expect to be fully better around February or March.´ When he said that I thought, ´Maybe my vocal chord is like Jimmy Rollins´ hamstring.´´
Simon & Garfunkel reunited in 2003 for the highly successful Old Friends tour, and resumed it last year in Australia and Japan. ´I´m delighted in 2009 that Simon & Garfunkel was alive and well,´ said Garfunkel. ´I was touched. I really feel we´ve led a charmed life.´

 | Yep, thats it. Forget the next Paul Simon solo tour...
Sorry to sound so pesimistic - as a solo Paul fan I feel nerved by that.
When should Paul release his solo album now?
2 weeks before the S&G tour? Laughable.
If they go on tour this spring, Pauls album will be postponed till fall.
I wonder what Paul will do. If he still has some self-esteem for his own work, he should say: Sorry Art: I release my album early 2011 and will promote it and have some fun with my band.
Please respect my own opinion.

 | I think Paul will be looking to his solo career first. Album release, promotion tour, full tour. His work with Art could come in the latter half of 2011. |

 | I agre Bodo.
Anyway one thing is Artie´s wishes and other one the reality.
But as Simon acts as a sphynx about his plans (album release, tours..etc)as usual it is impossible to know anything accuarately.
Last rumours point out that "So Beautiful Or So What" album release scheduled for next february would be delayed to next Spring maybe May.
But if there is a S&G summer tour we can even see it is newly posponed to 2011 Autum.
On January Paul have at least two concerts scheduled one with the Philarmonic an on January and February his wife and Steve Gadd will be promoting their Gaddabouts album, so Paul will stay at home to look after the children, that´s the reason to posne the release to May, but S&G summeer tour will delay surely to fall.
Maybe so in the meanwhile Sony has room to release another compilation to cash.

 | Good Thinking Ian . Everyone will be happy then ! And it would be great for Art and Paul to be touring when they hit the big 70. |

 | Pfff...I don´t see why they would feel constrained by 2011 summer. Art might be lobbying for his own camp, like he does sometimes.
S&G could easily tour in 2012 to do the dates they have missed in 2010.
No rush. |

 | I have the feeling that there is need to speed things up for Art Garfunkel - maybe he is loosing his voice completely in the next 2-3 years.
Isn´t it worse that he has voice problems since the end of April now, but just quit smoking 2 1/2 months ago (August..)? Someone might think that a tenor singer at the age of 68 should be more carefully.
Not sure what you think, but I would say that Mr. Garfunkel ist to blame for the 2nd tour cancellation.

 | I saw Art Garfunkel in June 2002 and his voice was weak then, same in December 2003. Then in New Zealand & Australia 2009. His voice again was weak and by Sydney show I feel certain that his mike was mixed down low - you could hardly hear him. Paul Simon pretty much carried the vocals of the 2 Sydney shows I attended.
It would be very dissapponting if Paul Simon delayed his new album for another round of Simon & Garfunkel concerts. |

 | I think these are all speculations now. It will take some time to see, if Art´s voice can carry a full concert and a full tour. I am quite sure that this time, they will not make announcements before everything is checked.
I hope, that the solo record is released in the beginning of next year. I am really looking forward to hearing new songs |

 | I had exactly the same thoughts as Bodo about his smoking. As a professional singer you should know better. Lot´s of fans were disappointed twice and had to cancel hotels, maybe flights or other travelarrangements.
Of course there is always a risk that concerts will be cancelled but the second time could have been avoided if Art would have been more responsable. And will Art be strong enough to stop smoking forever or will there be another risk if they plan another tour ??
I sure hope that Paul´s new album will be released early 2011. It is already finished for several months now.

 | BTW: Just a curious question - was it usual to not release a new album for several months in the 60s-70s and 80s ?
I have not much knowledge about that... I just think in that time they did not think that much about marketing and so...and just released the album when it has been finished. (but Paul was always very different I guess)

 | Didn´t the record company delay Graceland for a few months? I recall Paul and Ladysmith Black Mambazo were booked on Saturday Night Live to promote the album, then Warner Bros changed the release schedule. I believe they came up with Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes in the intervening period. |
