 | Jon, you are completely right besides the fact that two Greats out of this outstanding group of 17, Richard Tee and Michael Brecker, are sadly gone now. | | | | Bodo

 | IMO this is the update to the Paul Simons songbook version, which many say is the best verson ever. Clean, clear, sad.
I really feel uncomfortable when listening to the Wilkes Bare version. Just go to Minute 4:00. To they sing a sad song, or a ballad? It sounds like Metallica singin Thanks god its christmas to me. Art doin his version, Paul his own one. Happy, sad, happy, uhhhh, sad... come on, that sounds like nothing.
Then the music:
a) The drums add nothing to this song, nothing than noise.
b) The piano seems to play some nice bar jazz...well, I have to say it is so missplaced that I think this sound comes from another concert in the neighbour hall.
Alltogether the musicians just want to show how great they are, in their own style - and play their best - but it does not work together for a second.
The 1991 Version. 2 Instruments: electric guitar - bass.
Stunning!
Then the moment when Paul just holds on for 2 seconds in the beginning...silence..YES, that is silence. The electric guitar makes me a goosip skin. He sings sad, sad and rough, and I can not stop looking and listening, because all my senses are fixed on this song. I am even not allowed to breath for this 5 minutes, I want to hear every second. The bass comes in, you feel more comfortable, the mood changes. Rays guitar is brilliant, he plays it like singin the 2nd verse, the 2nd voice. And then this sad finish, when the song ends, also the concert ends, and you just feel empty.

 | Eh
Wow, ok, this was my first attempt to upload an ´illegal´ video on youtube - and I have never seen that before:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MO-7-DPjfTw
It seems as if youtube now has the possibility to analyze every song, compare it to copyrighted material, and then delete the audio.... not bad.
This could be the end of youtube IMO.

 | Thanks Bodo, my thoughts exactly. SOS in Central Park 91 is my favourite version, too. Ahh, I remember how proud I was when I was finally able to tab the intro! By the way, this makes me wish there was a remastered version of the CP91 live recording. I really need that song in crystal clear quality! :-) | | | | Klausi

 | SOS and Bridge are the two songs which made Garfunkel`s voice so important for the listeners. And maybe his then more shining outfit.
Not Mrs. Robinson, The Boxer, Homeward Bound, I Am A Rock, Feelin` Groovey - just those two songs.
Freezed forever. Cool but uncool! | | | | SimonD

 | Wilkes-Barre. The worst i have ever seen. Excruciating.
From the shadows, not the noble Jessy Dixon, or the focused Ray Phiri, but a man with an array of the most vapid posturings imaginable.(Paul even encourages at one point).
He kills the mood of the song stone dead. Yes Bodo, the backup musicians take the cue to go on holiday.
S+G,The Cabaret Circuit years obviously. The best advertisement for not going to see them this year. | | | | Ian

 | Hi Miriam, the CP91 CD set was/is a full digital recording[not neccessarily a good thing IMO] and probably sounds as good as it´s going to sound. The sound of that digital live recording is a little dry for my tastes. Listen to The Boxer from CP91 then compare to The same song on Live Rhymin´,which displays a warmth to Paul´s guitar that is totally absent on the later recording. Having said that, both performances are great of course. I don´t think CP91 needs re-mastering so much as it does re-equalising to reduce some of that digital dryness. The CP91 drums and percussion have a nice thump and clatter though. I´d Love to hear the recording remixed in 5.1 for a future Dvd release too! | | | | Paul

 | Ian - you´re comparing two different shows :) One was held in the theatre (inside, 1974) and the other one was outside (CP91). To my mind the acoustic differs much. And the atmosphere - right - is warmer on LIve Rhymin´. I agree. | | | | Ian

 | Hi Paul, yeah, you´re correct-two completely different recording locations. I´m not critisising CP91 at all-I LOVE the performance!! I was just commenting on Miriam´s suggestion that it should be re-mastered and that I think it would have little effect on changing the overall sound of the recording, where equalisation might be able to have some effect on the timbre of the audio. Certainly, for a live recording in the open air in front of a huge crowd,it is a superlative recording. I guess it was a critique on Digital recording as opposed to analogue. CP81 for example,is a fine recording from the same venue, but totally from analogue origins. | | | | |
