This is the first time I read that...(and it was on wikipedia, so I guess everyone knows it beside me?)

Alternate listing for The Rhythm Of The Saints:

According to an article published in Stereophile magazine, Simon´s original track sequence was changed when "the boys in Warners´ front office insisted the album´s lead single, ´The Obvious Child´ be given pride of place." To hear Simon´s preferred track order, the current release would have to be re-sequenced as 3-6-4-7-8-1-2-9-5-10 (see below).

"The Coast"
"She Moves On"
"Proof"
"Born At The Right Time"
"The Cool, Cool River"
"The Obvious Child"
"Can´t Run But"
"Spirit Voices"
"Further To Fly"
"The Rhythm of the Saints"

According to Michael Brecker, Paul always sequenced his albums very early. So its interesting he appears to have been overuled in this case.

Today with downloading and the popularity of i pod shuffle, such thought going into the order of actual tracks on an album has become almost redundant.

I think that The Coast is a great opening song.

I play the album now at this order, and I can say that it was not a good idea to put The Obvious Child to the first position. The song has not the same mood as the rest of the album. I know people who said they really liked the first song, but then there follow just weak songs. And that only happens when you start listening with the false song.

If you look at Graceland, then this is a really great opening song for the same album, while You Can Call Me Al would have degraded it to a Pop album for first time listeners.

But that is music buisness - they want to sell you something you do not like later. Nowadays with all these albums having only 1 good song this trick does not worky anylonger.

I find it hard to believe that Simon would be overruled by the company, especially coming off of the Graceland success. I would have thought that song sequence would be under his artistic control by way of contract. After all, Simon is known to have very carefully structured contracts. I find it hard to believe he would not retain the right to dictate the album´s structure.

Actually,Paul also regrets having released ´Hearts And Bones´ with ´Allergies´ as the opening track. He had wanted the the title song to be first, but it is unclear whether this was at the Record Company´s decision or not. Like Bodo said about ´The Obvious Child´,´Allergies´ is not representative of the music on the rest of the album. I think ´Hearts and Bones´ would have been a beautiful song to open the album. That´s why we have the sequencing funtion on our CD players I guess.

At Columbia he had a good relationship with Clive Davis, quite opposite to Walter Yetnikoff, his follower.

Simon was open for advise and Davis convinced him to release Kodachrome instead of American Tune as first single release, which in those days was much more important.

Graceland contained no Hit (Al was No. 23) in the US and the thought of big album sales was probably far away for Warners.

In fact it was the UK where it shot to No. 1 within 3 weeks.

His only No. 1 album in the US was Still crazy, whereas in the UK Paul Simon, Graceland and ROTS made No. 1.

But of course Graceland finally outsold Still crazy in the US too, selling nearly half of its copies in the 90`s, released 1986.

When Graceland was released Warner thought it would be another flop so let Simon put it out however he wanted. After going multi-platinum their ears had pricked up by the time The Rhythm Of The Saints was released.

Playing it in that sequence would not be a true Director´s Cut as the album was also completely re-mixed just before it was released, to increase the volume of the vocals. Paul had played it to friends who said they couldn´t hear the words and so he was persuaded to raise the level in the mix. I don´t know if that original cut exists - but it would be interesting to hear.

The placing of You Can Call Me Al (and The Obvious Child) as track 6 comes from an era when vinyl was the main format and it was just as easy to start playing the album on side 2 as side 1. This issue disappeared with the advent of a single-sided format (CD).

Humm...was ROTS issued as LP ? I do not remember...although around the 1990, I guess CD´s were much more popular, along with cassettes.

But Matthew....is there any support when you say that Warner thought that Graceland would be another flop ? This is the 1st time I have ever heard this...

I think in the Graceland Doc, Simon says the album was ready in May, but Warner asked to release it in the fall.

I presume Warner had not foreseen the tremedous success to come of the album, but I presume they did think the album was special and had good potential. No ? Who knows !

Of course - I have this LP

I have just read that in 1990 twice as much CD´s as LPs have been sold. Well, it was maybe the last year of vinyl, but still many people bought them.

BTW: Also YTO was released on LP. I have never seen a copy of Surprise on vinyl.
