 | Does anybody agree with this statement taken from Q for News?
I seem to recall they listed it in their least favourite opening lines in the actual magazine?!?!
`Hello darkness my Old friend/I`ve come to talk with you again.â?
Simon & Garfunkel ` The Sound Of Silence (Sounds Of Silence)
For our money, Paul Simon`s solo original (which you can find on The Paul Simon Songbook) is far superior to the weedily produced Simon & Garfunkel version.
While I agree with the statement in general, I disagree with the comment `weedily producedâ?.
Swine.

 | Well, I never heard the version on Songbook, so I don´t know about it. But "weedily produced"?
What were they thinking?
btw, great nickname, Mr. Beerbelly |

 | Hi Phoebe, I don`t believe they were thinking.
The Songbook version is great. It`s a purely acoustic album, but all through the Sound of Silence you can hear Paul stomping his foot.
That song makes me go cold when I hear it, superb.
You should be able to get The Paul Simon Songbook on CD now, I`ve got an original vinyl of it, as well as it being included in a Paul Simon Collected Works box set along with his other CSB albums.

 | As we discussed before on this forum Q have a peculiar attitude to Paul Simon. He didn´t make it into their 100 best singer songwriter list tho´ neil diamond and john denver did. The Surprise concerts weren´t listed in upcoming events, when he was in England - I could go on.
However on saying all that - The songbook version of the S&G songs are amazing the sound giving more substance to the words. I´ve converted Bob dylan fans to Paul Simon by introducing them to this album. |

 | When the discussion took place about the failure to list PS on the 100 "Greatest" Singer Songwriters, I didn´t realize that Neil Diamond and John Denver made the list.
Not to put down those two individuals, but, come on, doesn´t this show that the list (and the magazine, too) is total drivel?
It seems to me that such a huge oversight makes everything else in that magazine suspect of being equally idiotic. I´ve never seen the magazine, but someone who has a copy might want to consider posting a list of their advertisers. Then we could contact their advertisers and tell them they might want to advertise their products elsewhere. (For example, toilet paper might be a step up!)
Anyway, on a positive note, I echo the sentiments about the Songbook. In my opinion, all the songs that are on both the Songbook as well as on the S&G SOS album are better on the Songbook.
I´ll step off my soap box now. |

 | Nice one Richard - Love the comments.
Scatty, they did list him and made a funny and complementary comment, something like him being the talented half.
As a conselation a few weeks ago VH1 Classic did a top 100 American Heroes, he was No 6. The top five were REM, Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Madonna and Michael Jackson. He was in good company up until Prince!!! |

 | I think that was another list - this one was in the April 07 edition.

 | Don´t know how many people have heard this but my favourite version EVER of SOS is from the 2001 tour (best highlighted on the Boston bootleg) where Mark Stewart played cello. It´s hauntingly fantastic. |

 | Sorry Scaaty, I meant was listed in the gigs section.
Some years ago he was in a greatest rock star list, about 50 something if I remember correctly. |

 | I´ve heard the Songbook version and I personally prefer it. The song is about alination and so forth whcih is lost with two voices. Paul´s solo version is sadder and darker. |
