ENGLISH TRANSLATION -
I just ran the words through an English translation site and, although I don´t have time to tweek the English, I think we can get a feel for what was written.

It follows:
The caravan stops itself to Montreal

This is about 21 h 15 that Paul Simon and its musicians apparurent of an almost nonchalant manner on the scene of the room wilfrid-pelletier of the Place of the July 5 last Arts in the framework of an evening that was going to prove itself musically exceptional for the public montréalais.

Simon, orange cap, green shirt and black, smiling pants and squarely form, salua first quickly and generous this public, already standing, starved that it was by the 15 absence years of the songbook.

Next, the guitars and the accordion gaze at themselves to play the familiar melody of "Gumboots", first song of this spectacle that was going to cover in 1 h 45 several recesses of a rich career in tones and variety.

"I´s was having this discussion in has taxi heading downtown"... Here precisely the first song by which Simon tomba in Love of the music of the south african townships in 1984.

The biggest one surprised of this spectacle was doubtless the huge place granted by the New York musician to the songs of the album "Graceland" comparatively to the one of his more recent album. In fact, Simon there chanta the half of this disc, that celebrates besides this year his 20th birth birthday, with "Graceland", "Diamonds one the Sole of her Shoes" (revisited), "Gumboots", "You Can Call Me Al", "The Houseboy in the Bubble" (revisited with an audacious tempo slo-mo!) and "That Was Your Mother".

It seems that in contrast to the last one turned, this one be nature to please the general public that in major party, acknowledge it, did not buy none of the three last albums of Simon.

Despite this net orientation, Simon, faithful to his habit, alterna skillfully successes known ("Cecilia", "Coil Me Like has Rock", "Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard") and less popular songs indeed more obscure (a "You´re The One" superbly reworked, a soft one "Duncan") to the assistance of a band astonishment polyvalent, executing wonderfully and with precision all the musical nuances that impose in this astonishing variety of styles.

It seems that the nine weeks of repetition were justified in the painful lived tâtonnements to the listens new songs that composed the promotional turns of "Surprised" some weeks ago. The machine now perfectly is oiled and ready to dazzle.

"Outrageous" rings now well, "Father and Daughter", new darling of the general public, well returned, as the east all as much "Wartime Prayers". "How Can You Live In The Northeast?" constitutes doubtless the better success to the chapter of the new songs.

While a good party of the audience wonders from which goes out this song, Simon begins patiently the hypnose with a perfect phrasé and guitars that are mixed: "How can you build one the banks of has to fasten when the flood water for from the mouth?". The all finishes with a rock rhythm biting that forces the respect for the one that did not visibly finish to astonish to 64 years.

The nail of the evening in regards to us was the successful remaniement of "Mrs. Robinson", seasoned of the guitar to the lightly psychedelic effects of Vincent Nguini, but where Simon surprises everyone while abandoning suddenly his acoustic guitar to play Rock N´ Roll kid in a solo to the Fender recalling Bo Diddley. Magic!

This is precisely in these moments that one wonders again this that can encourage so many people to prefer unconditionally the sound Simon and Garfunkel to the reworked and colored versions of a Simon here alone master on board and that can free itself diktat "two voices and has guitar".

Except for the nostalgic aspect of this that constitua claimed it voice of a generation, it is necessary to note that the spectacle of the "Old Friends Turn" of 2003-2004 appears enough moche comparatively to the dynamic arrangements of this turn and to creativity of which does here Proof Simon and its musicians.

On this point, we have a little less appreciated "Underpants Slidin ´Away ", already heard with a similar arrangement at the time of the last one turned Simon and Garfunkel. As for "Still Crazy After All These Years", she lightly was ruined by a singer that does not arrive to keep its hands when they are not occupied to handle a guitar.

Other dampers: in an of its some verbal interactions with the public - only in English, as if it was in Ohio - Simon acknowledged that it had not learned the existence of the homage that it had been consecrated for him the day before that the very day of the concert, all while adding that in any case, it would not have been there. That provoked a small water shower cold with certain spectators, although it remercia sincerely those and the one that had it "hommagé". All truth always is not good to say...

Recall that the international Festival of Montreal jazz (FIJM) had put the package to unfold the red rug to the arthur former extra Garfunkel, notably while organizing a big homage in the open where of the artists of big calibre (Elvis Costello, Daniel Lanois) had devançé or delayed them arrived or Montreal departure in order to pay homage to the singer.

This incident created a certain confusion. The FIJM was besides obliged to clarify the things the next day while specifying that the management of the singer had beautiful and put well being to the current of the concert homage, letters in New York origin to the support.

After the concert of July 5, a ceremony to the improvised paces, to which an alone been able journalist to attend, lives the discount of the first one "International Montreal Jazz Festival Spirit Award" to Paul Simon for his exceptional contribution to the music.

The FIJM had thought to do put back it price on the scene in front of the fans, but this suggestion straight was refused by the management of the troubadour of the big apple.

In front of so many love and of praises, one could have thought that Simon would have done gift of some additional songs at the time of the concert or that it would have delivered some interviews to the press montréalaise. Nothing of that did not unfortunately produce itself. The caravan sets off again all simply towards Burlington to the Vermont where took place the next concert.

I had wondered when I first read that there would be a tribute in Montreal on July 4 why they would do that when PS had an engagement to be in Cooperstown on that date. Sounds like he wasn´t even aware of the tribute until afterwards. In respect to the musicians who performed in Montreal as a tribute to him, you really think he should have been made aware of the event. Sounds very odd and I´m wondering what exactly his "management" does.

Thank you Bonnie for the translation...yikes...smiling pants ! LOL !!!

I agree that it does not sound very good for the management. And who is surprised ? Have you seen his official web site ? I mean no offense to our friend who write the texts on it, but it is poor. Have you taken a look at Jerry Douglas web site ?!

To go back to last week, go figure what happened really.

Maybe Simon does not want to be bothered by that kind of things ? Or his management did not really see the size and importance of the Montréal event and did not bother telling him...and in the end goofed completely.

Anyway, to learn everything about it, you can read this article published in La Presse last week. Translation machine once again ?

But hey ! Nobody lost sleep on this ! And it is not very high on the scale of human sufferings.

Mog,

Thanks for the 2nd article. Again, I didn´t change the wording from the translator, partly due to time constrictions, partly because I like to read as it was translated. Sounds to me like Paul Simon is very down-to-earth, but someone in his management isn´t nearly as grounded.

Here´s the translation:

Paul Simon, the price and the homage: that itself is it passed?
Philippe Renaud It in a hurry special
Collaboration

Finally, Paul Simon was serious Wednesday evening last when it asserted, at first of his concert to the room wilfrid-pelletier, to have learned only in the morning very that a concert in his honor had been given the day before in front of thousands of Montréalais? We did it rather a demonstration of New York humor? Avoiding having to split, André Ménard, co-founder of the Festival jazz and metteur in scene of the homage to Simon, prefers to talk about "artistic fuzzy"...

"This is the one or the other. Nevertheless, I have a letter of the to manage personal (singer) that thanks us, in his name and in the name of Paul Simon, for the homage, but that Simon would be in concert to Cooperstown (in the New York state) the very day, etc.", said Ménard, that had to have also "received strangely" the remark of Simon.

Of more, the management of Paul Simon refused than one puts back for him on scene and in front of its fans the price Montreal International Jazz Festival Spirit Award. The price, created this year to underline "an exceptional contribution to the music by a popular artist" and of which Paul Simon is consequently the first winner, has for him therefore been put back in the green Parlor of the Place of the Arts, after his concert and in front of an alone journalist, English-speaking press montréalaise.

"When one informed the management that the festival desired to put back a price to Paul Simon, on scene or in the framework of a press conference, the management said no. One understands (their choice); that pleased us him to put back a price, and that pleases us that it accepted giving a concert to the Festival of jazz. But it is sure that one would have preferred that the public and the media attend the discount", commented on Marries ève Boisvert, boss of the press relations of the Festival of jazz.
She adds that, until Paul Simon arrives to Montreal Wednesday, the management or had not confirmed or invalidated that the star accepted receiving this price on scene or at the time of a press conference.

Without grudge

André Ménard explains thus the decision of the entourage of the star: "When Paul Simon takes the scene, it takes it for him. That, I can understand. If the artists do not want (of a price discount), one does not insist, this is all. It preferred a ceremony some deprived." Also, Paul Simon refused as TV movie cameras are admitted in the room wilfrid-pelletier. "It has a small problem with the pictures in movement, laughs Ménard. I do not know why. It did not want to be filmed, this is as that. ..â?
On the other hand, the co-founder of the festival assures that Paul Simon was delighted to receive his price. "The contact with him was fantastic, does it relate. It spoke with Michel Rivard for around fifteen minutes... Himself does not appear difficult as person."

"That it gave a concert to the festival, this is fully sufficient for me, adds André Ménard. For the remainder, I had not any expectations. If it had received his price on scene or in press conference, ç´aurait been well, but, to the bottom, this is not serious."

Oh yeah...I had forgotten about the TV cameras not being allowed. They were even at Madonna´s show !

Anecdote: on July 6, I watched the evening news to see their summary of Simon´s show. The cultural chronicler appeared on the screen and just said something like "it was a big evening yesterday with the PS concert, but since TV cameras were not allowed, we have been to 2 other shows that we will now talk about"...and then she continues !

Also, the show got very nice reviews in the newspapers. Strangely, when chroniclers of La Presse presented their best moments of the Festival at the end of the latter, Nobody put Simon´s show as part of them !

I think they might have been frustrated a little. They gave lots of exposure to PS and his music during the week...and you know, when you see this management attitude...

Also, a prestigious festival gives you a price and you just let them know the day of the event in what context you want to receive it or not, it does not sound very professionnal.

One can think that the bottom line was just to give a great concert and that´s what Paul did after all. But...

Remember that the festival decided to honour Paul literally at the last minute. Paul is also the kind of guy who is a little uneasy about all the accolades and attention that come with being a "rock icon." Would an award ceremony *really* have improved what was a fantastic concert? I doubt it. Paul also took the time to sincerely thank the performers who sang his songs the day before (BTW, the jazzfest booked the tribute concert after Paul had set his summer itinerary - so why is PS blamed for the conflict?). That he half-joked about not attending anyway shouldn´t be held against him.

All in all, I think La Presse is making something out of nothing. Paul put on a great show, Simard and Menard put on one of the best jazz festivals in more than twenty years, 100,000 people came out to hear les chansons de Paul Simon - what´s to complain about?

Joey,
Sounds like the festival knew about the honor previously, but had not heard back from management whether PS wanted to accept in public or private. No wonder, if he didn´t even know about it. I understand his reluctance to have the cameras record an event about which he was uncertain and had no prepared speech. Plus, he seems to have concerns about being photographed in general, if I´m not mistaken, uneasy about his appearance. The question I have is why he wasn´t made aware of the tribute. I think news of the festival was posted on our site, in the articles section, dated JUNE 7. How is it Paul Simon wasn´t informed until JULY 5, a day after the event? I´m not blaming him, and I´m sure there are tributes paid to him regularly where one group wants to honor him with some award or another, but I would think whoever is in charge of his PR definitely should have informed him of this so he doesn´t look clueless when he shows up in the same city the day after a huge turnout honoring him which featured musicians with whom he has professional connections and relationships to maintain. I understand the concert being scheduled after PS´s tour which prevented his being in attendance in Canada on July 4. That´s not the issue. I don´t think anyone is blaming him for the conflict. Then again, if his brother is in charge of publicity (I´m NOT positive that he is), I guess it would be hard to fire him.
