I recently stumbled on the beautiful demo version of Train in the Distance, which I actually like more than the album version, just vocal and solo acoustic guitar.

So I set about trying to learn it and discovered... it's quite hard!

OK so the guitar is tuned down 2 half steps, the song is in D. I can play the intro.

What I'm struggling with is the picking pattern for the verse and chorus. From what I can tell it's not really a 'standard' Travis Picking pattern because the thumb doesn't always play on beat 1. Sometimes he plays it early, on the last 8th note of previous bar, and sometimes he doesn't. Same with the melody. Of course it all sounds very fluid.

I wonder if he is fretting whole chords or just the few note required. Probably a mixture of the two I guess.

Any suggestions for how to get a bit further with this project? Are there other tracks with similar patterns (but with tabs available or decent video tutorials) that I could study first?
