This is such a disappointment. It's nothing like the songs
he usually writes. So far I've heard I think 3 songs, if
they are all like the ones he released earlier, just a shock
would not buy this album.

So far great reviews in Germany for the Album and Paul Simon, who is still able to do something surprising and very tasteful.

Received the CD today.

Cool booklet.

I enjoyed the better quality of sound from the CD, especially on The Werewolf. Realized after the fact that we had been given the mp3 versions of Werewolf and Cool Papa Bell.

My review of a few days still stands. The critical response will be very positive, I am sure...'Oh, such a genius!' For people who have followed him, you might be left on your appetite here and there though, and see some light signs of repetitions.

Golden Gate Gospel Quartet ? Used in SBOSW.
A song about a spiritual trip in South America ? Yep, Spirit Voices had been done.
The tuba solo in Cool Papa Bell ? Well, makes me thing a lot about the New Orleans solo in 'Love and Blessings'.
Songs about how we search to be loved by God ? Well, 'Love is Eternal Sacred Light' was already doing it.
A song about how love can be hard to sustain ? Well, it was dealt with 'Love'.
Some sounds on 'The Riverbank' will make you recall 'Quiet'.
A percussion part on 'In a parade' seems to replicate the start of 'Hurricane Eye'.
Etc.

But there are also lots of new things to enjoy...and let's enjoy it !

Metascore is a company handling with critics for music (and other events like movies etc.).

Based on 10 critics Stranger to Stranger gets 89 of 100 possible points.

The best review is from the Guardian with 100 Points.

One German paper wrote (Die Welt, quite big): His best since Graceland.

Others and the world get smaller, Paul Simon gets bigger.

It is always his best since 'Graceland'.

As long as they can plug 'Graceland', so the reader could actually have an idea about who they are talking about !

'Best since Graceland'... I'm hearing you Mog, but then Dylan has the same thing with 'best since Blood on the Tracks'... music journalism is a superficial profession for sure which can only deal in headlines which are necessariy reductive...

For my part, i'm listening now on vinyl, and it sounds fantastic.... as the individual tracks were released I simply wasn't hearing it, especially leading off with Wristband to which I'm afraid my heart hardened immediately... hearing it all together I've revised my view completely.. I'd say STS is endlessly inventive, and if we true fans have heard some of the moves before , well now i don't seem to mind so much. I'm enjoying it a great deal...

I'm gonna put Fallen Angels on next....

Listening to the new album on a good sound system is such a joy. All the twists and turns, the wide varity of instruments and sounds, the echo's, background singing. Love the humor and the lyrics. A lot to discover, a masterpiece IMO. I also love the parts Paul used from his earlier songs, how he weaved them very clever into the new songs.

Yes, the sound is really great!

Concerning the parts he used before I can only refer what Paul said in the Omnibus Special 1988 to a UK-Interviewer:

"I think I had no new idea since the sixties."

And he mentioned the sounds that he loved when he was a kid, Doo-Wop, Gospel, Rock and Roll.

But he mixed it with all sounds which were strange to him before and forced himself to search for things new for him. Also for musicians which were new for him, and therefore he cannot but sometimes change "his band". He never had one and the Album with the worst reviews was One-Trick-Pony. The echo was: Paul Simon tries to sound like Paul Simon.
A few more musicians maybe could have made sense.

Rock and Roll was dead quite suddenly in the early sixties after only about ten years, but Paul still has great respect for Elvis, the Everly Brothers etc.

(My favourite Elvis song is "In the Ghetto" from the sixties.)

No one could foresee the enduring and raising quality of Rock/Pop so the record companies forced the artists to a quick output.

They were not prepared for those incredibly raising record sales, but had to react and got more open to
give unknown artists a chance. If one of five records will be a hit, it was ok.

This has changed completely.

Record sales are not a factor in the Music Business anymore.
It is probably more difficult to get attention for new artists than ever.

I was thinking yesterday that maybe I will revisit Hearts and Bones....the *last* album where Simon made all the songs on his guitar !

Got my copy of the album last Friday. I had other things going on and just listened this morning to the entire album. Reviews are raving and I'm very much impressed by the way Paul on each album is able to develop new sounds, new rhythms, new instruments. I have to 'get used' to the new songs.
When I was 16 years old, I hardly had any momey to spend. I went several times to the record store to listen to the new Paul Simon album Still crazy after all these years. I didn't like it. But I went again to listen and still I didn't like it. After all I bought the album knowing that it couldn't be possible that Paul Simon - my Paul Simon - released an album that wasn't worth listening to. Well the weeks after my purchase the record did't leave the turntable. And the lesson for me was: never judge a song or a record after hearing it only one or a few times. 'Surprise' is another example of a couple of songs that have to grow on you. It's a masterpiece you don't recognize at first listening.
So now I am sure the songs turn out to be better after listening to them several times. I looking forward to this discovery of the album as I am looking forward to the concert in Ziggo Dome.

1975 I was 17 years old and Still crazy was the album that brought me away from S&G to Paul Simon forever.

Unfortunately in Germany his first success was Graceland and you didn`t hear much about Paul before. And then there was this five terrible years until his next album came out. With the exception of Slip slidin` and Stranded in (which seems not so great to me).

In the meantime you could chose between Punk/New Wave and Disco.

In the Documentary about his last visit to South Africa Quincy Jones stated, that God gave us 12 notes. It was clear he was convinced, only God could give us Nr. 13.

Now Paul has 43 notes and if he finds or creates 7 more, he has 50 notes to write a song...

I received the cd yesterday and I loved it straight away. Some songs are like you are used to from Paul Simon and some are so new and fresh. I like them all!!
