do you guys think that the Mr. Still Water line in "The Cool, Cool River" is a reference to Artie? artie had just published his book of poetry in 1989 called "still water", this wouldve been right during the time that paul was working on ROTS.

Good observation Greg. Could well have been a reference to AG.

Maybe but frankly, i don't believe it.
I think many people try to find references to AG in Paul's work but please, leave him alone with AG! Unlike this poor Arthur, Paul is not obsessed by his ex music partner!

Well Mariano, the conclusion is: he is. Since it is of course no coincidence that Mr Still Water refers to the person who at the same time wrote the book Still Water. Greg, this was not new to me. Apart from this, Simon sang also "art garfunkled" in a Simple Desultery Philippic, so this is not a new phenomenon... Both singers are intertwined, whether they do not like that anymore or not. I think the behaviour of a few forum writers is childish to act like Simon is everthing, and Garfunkel is nothing. Garfunkel would certainly be not that famous without Simon. But Simon would also not be so magical without Art. And certainly Art gave magic to almost all S&G songs. The fact that his voice nowadays has lost its quality and power, does not change that

Michiel, you really think that Paul is obsessed by AG?!?

I believe that AG and AG's fans are obsessed by the idea of an obsession...

For the rest, they were childwood friends and music partners; end of the story.

we know that "The Cool, Cool River" is about paul's relationship with carrie fisher, PS said in a few places that the song "it's about men being afraid of women's anger”. he also says its a fighting rhythm, a song about violence & prayer. and i think paul folds in other conflicts into this song. so it seems to make sense that Mr. Still Water would be a reference to his tense relationship with AG. why else would he use that line or that lyric? AG's book came out almost precisely around the time that PS would've been working on this song. im not trying to incite an argument, im just making an observation.

A little bit too direct or obvious and not very subtle, no?
He didn't call Carrie Fisher miss "Postcard from the Edge" or miss "Surrender the Pink" but he refers to "my storybook lover", which is more subtle, in a more "simonian way", if i may say...

I have to agree with Marieno about Mr. Still Water.

I always thought this blog has an interesting view on the song.

Marieno, you think Mr Still Water is a too direct refrence? I don't think so, only a handful of people know that his former partner was writing a book titled Still Water around that time... If that reference is too direct, it makes 95% of all Simon's refrences too direct...

Thanks Ans and i agree with Scaaty: at least more convincing than a AG reference...
