Yes Ans, The Dreamer of Music: the good old days... :-(

One of Paul's appearances on British TV for the ROTS release; he seems always more at ease when he is in England: for him too, the remains of the "good old days"?

And 'Tard dans la soirée' was great too !

Disappeared in complete indifference though, but...

Greg: I think we should write that book together. It has been an important album in my life.

mog: it has been a very important album in my life as well! if you keep feeding me interesting material for the book, ill be sure to credit all of you. I'm looking for every last little scrap of info about RoTS.

brenda: you're right, the steyn interview is from '88 just before paul talked to eddie palmieri and met milton nascimento and started having ideas about RoTS. i would love a copy of the Born at the Right Time documentary though. DVD or a digital copy would be fantastic! I'm happy to pay for shipping and cost of a blank DVD.

thanks for your replies everyone, keep em coming!

does anyone know which specific issue of Stereophile magazine that the alternate ROTS track listing was talked about? I've seen this listed as a source in lots of places but none of them list which particular issue it is from. any help would be appreciated, I'm hoping to track it down.

also there is a mention of the alternate track listing in Paul Zollo SongTalk Spirit Voices interview with paul. another nice tidbit from that interview is paul was working on Thelma right at that time and had planned on putting it as the 3rd track on the album, but the order got reshuffled later and Thelma was scrapped. Thelma's working titled was "the shuffle tune"

Thelma is a mystery to me.

The lyrics seems to make reference to Edie.

But when the song was made, it was two years before they actually got together.

My theory is that the music was made for ROTS, left without lyrics. Then the song was taken up later...'92-93, and lyrics added and track finalized.

When was the music of Thelma written?

well, he was working on the track for Thelma in the spring of 1990 which was when Paul Zollo conducted his SongTalk interview with PS.
they are actually in the studio during when paul was working on the song, it was not named Thelma at that point in time yet, it was named "the shuffle tune".

zollo asks specifically if paul has lyrics for this tune yet and paul says " no. nothing's coming. first i get the melody"

this can be found in the Paul Simon Companion book. or Songwriters on Songwriting by Paul Zollo.

paul met edie on nov. 5 1988. im guessing she was on his mind throughout the making of ROTS, which basically lasted from 1988-1990.

Thelma first saw the light of day in 1993 on a CD single and then on the Paul Simon Anthology.

it is very possible that paul never completely finished Thelma before the release of ROTS in october 1990 (or he did finish it before then but scrapped it from the final version of the album). or its possible that he finished it up between oct. 1990 and 1993 when it was first released.

Thanks Greg, you're right, i reread this article.

Maybe he has Edie in his mind when he made Thelma (the lyrics are really obvious) but he was in a Carrie state of mind when he wrote the other songs...

Also I think he is referring to the birth of his son Adrian in this song which was about 1992?
