Michiell - you are just assuming in your mind that Paul Simon meant to say it about Art Garfunkel. Paul did not say "I enjoed singing with Sting much more than with Art Garfunkel"

It is Art Garfunkle going to the journalists and saying stupid and nasty things about Paul Simon.

Paul Simon on the other hand, was repairing that friendship in the year 2000, while he received a big honour, that he wants to become friend of Art Garfunkel again. He opened the door, He was the one asking for friendship and made touring possible again.

What Art Garfunkel says makes nothing possible. He is unfriendly and nasty to Paul - for no reason, as Paul never ever said anything bad against Art Garfunkel in the last 25 years or more.

Michiel - you do not say words like "idiot, jerky, or I created a monster" in an interview about your so called best friend, the one you are dreaming of touring again in the future.

Tell me just one incident where Paul Simon every in his life said something bad like that, directly or even just as a side note about Art Garfunkel. I do not know any interview. Saying how much he enjoed touring with Sting is not the same like saying: Art Garfunkel is an idiot.

Art Garfunkel is long enough in that business to know how the press works. He must know exactly what his words will create. If not, he became complete insane the last years, sorry, that is the only explanation.
Does he really think they will become good friends and start a tour, after calling Paul and idiot, jerk, monster?? He can be more than happy if Paul will ever mention him.

But lets see, the first biography by Paul Simon himself will be published in a few months - I take every bet that Paul will say a lot of positive things about Art Garfunkel.

I am really surprised how you can find anything positive in the words Garfunkel is telling to that journalist. Seems Garfunkel is asking for some publicity, thats all. Poor boy.

Hi Bodo, AG should definitely have choosen his words more careful, because I agree that with his experience he should have known what his words should do. Don't forget that I'm a PS fan too!! But if he said jerk in the interview with a eye wink and a smile, that would make the setting completely different. What I mean is, this is a written answer, you do not see the gestures, expressions on his face, etc etc....
But he should have been more careful, that's for sure.
And AG claims his voice is 96% back. I saw him in Haarlem in March, and every high hard note was less than in the past. So I would not say 96%, but 90%, if it is at all possible to assing a percentage to the quality of a voice....

I would say that BOTH Paul & Art has said some unnecessary hard thing about each other in the past.
Since 2003 we have (almost) got used to NOT reading comments like the latest from Art. So it's quite impossible to understand why start again at the age of 73. If Art really wants another reunion he should have realized that speaking to the press about it - and in those terms! - would risk damage the possibility for ever. Why not just pick up the phone and call his old pal?

There must come some respond (by Paul) or apologizes now from Art. Otherwise that friendship has ended, this time forever. I do not think Paul will stand up again and ask him official on TV to become friends again. Thats what Mr. Garfunkel is always waiting for.

>>Just saw "This Is 40". Funny. But joke about Art Garfunkel was not. He was the great singer of S&G and a gifted record producer. Nothing laughable about his talent.

Thank you Brenda for bringing it back from memories.
This is so true. Paul defends Art, just at the right moment - if he would not have said anything, and just said that he liked the movie, then I am sure the media would have made a story out of it, saying Paul Simon likes the movie that makes jokes about Art Garfunkel.
But he is very sensitive to that, he did not like that joke and thought it is not telling the truth, and he knew he had to say something to defend his friend.

Someone should send this quote to Art Garfunkel. I am sure he has not read it. He should feel very worried about his own crazy comments.

" I do not think Paul will stand up again and ask him official on TV to become friends again."

Has he ever done that?

I hope Paul can see that this is really "nothing", but that it has been boosted by the press to "something big". On the other hand I agree that Art should call him and apologize. But I doubt he has the courage to do so... :(
If Art really said these things to Paul in 1971 one could better understand Simons harsh words about the split in the Rolling Stone 1972 interview. But why Art feels that he has to remind the world (and Paul) about this 44 years afterwards is really incomprehensible and so stupid.

Isn't it tragic that when these guys make the news nowadays, it is more often than not about some kind of less important scandal (marihuana, the skipped concert in Sweden, and now this fiasco on Art's account, and the domestic quarrel with Paul and Edie)?

The story is now on the front page of Yahoo and on Good Morning America. "Simon’s rep did not immediately respond to ABC News’ request for comment." I wonder whether Paul will say "That's his opinion and I respect that." I find the comments on his height to be the most insulting part of it.

I hope that Paul (or his rep) will not make any comment: silence is the best, it is not worth it; let this poor Arthur being a pathetic clown...

Hakan - when Paul was introducted into R&R Hall of Fame in 2001, he held a speech, which was on TV. He said:
"I want to thank Art Garfunkel and say that I regret the ending of our friendship, and I hope that some day before we die we will make peace with each other," he said, then added, pausing for comedic effect, "No rush."(the joke was meant that he still thinks he is not old, not going to die soon...)

This speech made some people from the Grammy nomination think about how they can bring them togeter, so Simon and Garfunkel received that nonsense of a "Lifetime achievement Grammy award" in 2003 (come on, that Grammy is nonsense...), the pure idea was to bring them on stage together and repair their friendship.
The whole thing ended up with the 2003/2004 S&G tour.

So yes, it was Paul who started that thing.

I can not remember any interview in which Paul every said something mean about Art Garfunkel. Maybe he explained artistical differences, but there was no idiot, jerk, monster a.s.o.

I remember that in 1998 when Art Garfunkel was asked about what he thinks about Paul Simon (refering to the Capeman musical) that Art Garfunkel answer was "He's gone fat"
Thats what I know about Garfunkel.

Paul could go to Saturday night live and play Napoleon or a monster in one of their sketches.

That would be the only way to respond.

Hey Bodo, "he's gone fat", well I have to admit that is a rather funny remark. Come on, that was meant with an eye wink.
Just some words of AG in 2004 "Paul Simon has enriched my life enormously". Wow, that's certainly positive.
Some words of Paul Simon during the Central Park 1981 press conference "I just can't get along with the guy <meaning AG>; he's very difficult."
My point is: seeking for remarks of the one to the other is a bit like cherry picking. I agree with Hakan that the world press has blown up the whole thing. As said before, AG probably said things with an eye wink, and a smile. Written words are always misleading.
I think it's said that thousands of web sites are copyinf each other with the same stuff. A lot of the sites even put there own explanations in it. It's blown up completely. But AG should have realized that saying things on PS means that every word of it should have been said extremely careful. Since he did not do that, as it appears, an apology might be a wise thing to do (for Art to Paul)..

I can see the skit now -- a frizzy blond haired mad doctor working in a Frankenstein-like lab. A body on a table hooked to wires. He throws the switch, power surges and Paul sits up pulling off the sheet. "Thanks Artie. Live from New York its Saturday Night!" He says.

“I don't believe what the papers are saying They're just out to capture my dime, Exaggerating this, exaggerating that”

Paul's words. So I don't think the interview will be annoying to him.... He knows how exaggerating works in today's press/internet/etc..

Perfect script Richard, love it.

Michiel - there is not much to exaggerate on the sentence "I created a monster".
