 | I had thought of this myself -- can see both sides. I would rather he not go to Israel for several reasons, but I suppose this is a complicated issue. I used to be quite sympathetic toward Israel, but have lost a lot of respect for the political leadership of this country in recent years. My guess is that he won´t change his mind on this. |

 | I´m inclined the other way I´m afraid. When one doesn´t mind sending their citizens into a crowded area with explosives strapped to their bodies, killing and maiming not only their victims, but they themselves, how can anyone else be concerned with their ´threatened´ existence. The moment they cease such cruel activities as these, and stop supporting terrorists who slam big chunks of western technology into the sides of huge buildings, maybe then I could see them as victims. |

 | Since when did this forum become a platform to deliver political diatribe?
Whether or not you agree or disgree this site is about the music, not his political preferences. |

 | Um,some things are inextricably linked I´m afraid, hence the reason for this open letter. |

 | I don´t accept the "inextricably linked" answer. I note that PS is playing in Ireland which has its own well documented isssues but I see no letters of concern.
My point is this; it doesn´t matter whether you think he´s right or wrong to play in a certain country, this site is about musical appreciation, not political dogma. |

 | So your suggestion is that this shouldn´t be discussed? Well,I agree, but the original poster put up the link to a letter that has a clear political agenda, and which is tied to this attempt to brow beat Paul Simon from performing his music for his fans in Israel. I´m just offering up an opposing view why this concert should go ahead. As for Ireland, please don´t give anyone ideas. |

 | Good point, Proof. And as Harris pointed out, there were somewhat similar problems between Britain and Ireland in the not so distant past. Should Paul have boycotted Britain because of the way the government treated some Irish people? Should he have avoided Ireland because of the way some of their people acted towards Britain?
It´s not like Paul is playing a private concert for the Government of Israel; it´s for the citizens. I don´t see why politics should enter in to it. |

 | those are very valid points - and like many others I am disappointed Paul Simon is playing in Israel, however it must be pointed out he is also playing in Turkey and maybe that is his way of balancing the situation.
I don´t think there was ever a call by Irish Republicans for a cultural boycott of Britain, nor vice versa. that would mean we couldn´t watch Coronation St or support Manchester United! |

 | I guess there are 2 sides to every issue. I just don´t know why he would enter into such a troubled region. I hope he stays safe. |

 | It is truly arrogant to "ask" Paul to get involved in this conflict. Whatever happened in South Africa, Paul had African musicians in his band, made music involving the African tradition, etc. Do you think that everywhere he goes, someone should attempt to involve him in politics based on their perception of victim and oppressor? Beyond ridiculous. Paul is a music artist, and when/if he ever wants to be political, that will be up to him. This open letter is tremedously narcissistic, not because of any point of view, but by virtue of its very existence. |

 | Although not wishing to get involved in this debate, it annoys me when articles like this use inaccurate statements to back up their assertions.
1. FALSE: The oft-repeated statement that Paul broke the UN cultural boycott. FACT: Paul was placed on the UN´s blacklist but was removed from the list when he wrote to them explaining he had in fact not broken the rules that related to performing in South Africa.
2. FALSE: The concert is not publicised on Paul Simon´s website. FACT: The concert is listed with all the other dates and there was a news item on the extra dates that includes the Israel one. |

 | Paul does Not deliver any political statements, not by his songs nor by his concerts. If you want to find a reason to stop a concert you always will find something. You could say no One ever should play in germany or austria because of the Nazi time. So that letter makes no sense. Do Not mix politics and music. |
