| I wrote a story. In it a character hums a tune of Paul´s to himself, and the song is integrated a bit more than that, but the story is not about Paul or his song. I simply want his blessing to do this, as I write for paying markets and they may be concerned over this.

Can I use three lines from Slip Slidin Away in my story? Should I go to nashville tonight and scream my question at Paul while he´s trying to play? Thoughts? And, you don´t see an implied question in there? Is this enough question marks for you yet?

"Is this enough question marks?" And this person claims to be a writer?

I´m not sure about what you should do in this situation. I would have thought that you could use a few lines with impunity. I do recall though, reading a book(Stephen King mayhap??) that likewise used a lyrical quote from Paul Simon, and some other songwriters, and made mention of the use in the beginning of the book. Like ´lyrics used by permission from BMI ´ or something like that. Whether it´s just a courtesy or whether actual permission or fee is required,I couldn´t say. Sorry.

I would definately say you are free to do that btw. A fictive character singin a Paul Simon song is not a copyright problem.

That´s a question for a copyright lawyer, not Paul Simon.
