| Is anyone else struck by the fact that, while the S&G catalogue is associated with 60´s counterculture and Paul has liberal politics, there is something very establishment, kind of Tin Pan Alley about Paul. For example, he would never tell the Grammy people "Screw your stupid award." Examples...

Yes,I have always been aware of that. What you describe would be expected of a Lennon or a Dylan. Coincidentally,I think Paul himself is conscious of this as well,or something like it,according to the latest article in Strolling Bone magazine. He was part of that counter culture along with the Dylan´s and Lennon´s etc,but what separates Paul from the pack,is that his internal morality would leave him embarrassed to utter something like ´screw this award´. Remember his comments about Mick Jagger´s stage apparel in the early 70´s? Basically he´s just too refined to ever do anything like that, indeed he´s embarrassed to even witness someone else doing it. I think that´s one of the reasons I admire him,as I´m a little the same way myself...

Agree Ian. Joseph Shabalala once said "He is a polite man"

In this case it depends on how you define establishment. Simon is not a typical rock and roller. never was. So in the rock and roll culture he´s very counter-cultural.

True, and I wouldn´t classify him as Tin Pan Alley because Paul Simon doesn´t just pour out songs for money. He meticulously crafts songs and puts out fewer albums than most artists, although he makes them of extremely high quality.
