 | Hi, Brandy. The Sound of Silence is a great song to Play. Asking whether a song is easy or not is never a question that can be answered yes or no.
The thing is when you learn to play a song it is relative to the amount of practice and attention and enthusiasm you apply in wanting to learn it. It´s not so much that one song is as easy or difficult as another, more the many various techniques involved in playng it. There are a lot of guitarists in the forum who understand this. Personally, I think The Boxer is a great one to get to know (Live Rhynin´ version is the one Paul plays most in concert)and the one best suited to solo accompaniment and has a basic Travis picking pattern throughout. Still I suggest it is recommended to study Travis picking first. All of Paul Simon´s early songs use this alternating thumb and finger(s) technique. In the early 60s he used a thumb pick and one index finger pick, then later added a middle finger pick. Today he plays using his nails only. In guitar playing as in any other instrument the basics are what count. Spaced repetition over time is what it needs....and then some. Rich Kent is your man for the TABS. |

 | P.S. Brandy.
Quick tip - If you haven´t used tablature before print a few lines off first and get used to reading it. I know it all looks complicated at first, but keep studying it until you get the " ah, I get it" feeling. Then attempt a song. The chords above the TAB help with finger positions.

 | Paul Simon transcribed is better, look into the book and you will be surprised.
Exact description of the song (in words) and he also explains every more complicated notes or bends or hammer on´s in words.
You get the tabulature(like on the internet) + normal notation(notes) + guitar chords (so you also always see the exact speed if you have the normal notes)
Not compareable to internet tabulature text files. |

 | Brandy.....have a look at Guitarnoise.com
They have lessons that will teach you to play Bookends and Scarborough Fair. Scarborough Fair is in the intermediate section but it´s fairly easy. |

 | Plus, Nobody plays guitar quite like Paul Simon. The phrasing is up to the individual. Nothing is set in stone. Just enjoy playing. We could go on forever here. Everyone´s advice here is good, sound advice. Davy Graham wasn´t so pleased that Simon didn´t play Anji the way he wrote it...Simon did it his own way, which I think is much better than Graham´s or even Bert Jansch´s ....Simon´s version is the version for me personally....so songs need not be perfect copies of something else...otherwise what is the point? |

 | Hi!
My opinion is that simon and garfunkel songs are mostly the easiest songs to play. Mostly there are the regular chords in this songs. In Paul Simon songs you will see more complecater songs. My advice is to play Simon and Garfunkel songs if you begin to play the guitar, most of them are not hard to play. Of course, if you want them to play exactly like Paul does, it is difficult, but for the regular guitar player it isn´t very difficult.
You can always start just strumming the chord for each line. Like strumming the a-minor and sing "hello darkness my Old friend", and on the word "friend" you will strum the G chord. (if you play in C)
Hope you can all understand me :-)

 | BTW
I don´t like tabs, you can´t see how long each note takes. I like the traditional description. A combination is of course good too. But if you want to play single notes good, you will have to have traditional notes. If you want to play just the chords go to the "guitar chords" section (very nice things on it!) |

 | To be honest, I can read TAB perfectly . . . but I hate using it. Call me a purist, but I Love pure Old musical notation, or chord charts! I don´t like TAB, maybe it´s the numbers . . . remindme of MATH! EeeEEEkkk! Anyway, maybe I´ll suffer for it.
I found nice guitar chords for Paul Simon/ S & G songs at the following address:
http://w1.185.telia.com/~u18504009/paulsimon/chord s/church.html
That link will take you to the chords for "A Church Is Burning", but the entire website´s nice. Lots of songs.
Yes, I´ll start studying that Travis (I think that´s what you called it, right?) picking thing . . . I can fingerpick melodies, but that´s it right now. I think I´ll start with "Old Friends"
I´m more interested in playing S & G songs anyway because they´re very Folk-ish. Folk is my favourite genre. |

 | Oh, and a quick thought for Bing Frisby . . . I was talking to guitarists on the AG board and they said "The Boxer" was really difficult. Maybe it´s just a personel thing? |

 | Hi, Brandy.
I am lauging as all this has become very tongue in cheek. Personal guitar methods and favourite ways of learning.
The Boxer is a simple or complicted as you think it is.(Best stick to Paul Simon boards when talking guitar...Art plays a bit but.....!)
Any piece is rewarding after effort and time is taken to learn it.
Sorry julie that you find Anji a bit difficult. It sounds a difficult piece but is quite simple when you break it down. Homeward Bound too is a great song to learn.(But don´t tell that to Artie´s guys!!) ;) The Travis picking book that Bodo mentioned would be of great help to anyone.
Who thinks Anji and the Boxer are easy or difficult songs to play?
I watched the Haarlem 66 DVD a few days ago and Simon´s guitar work on that show is brilliant..he opens and ends with Anji. |

 | Ehm Anji - easiest? Well what tab are you playing then? This song has 4 different parts, is very fast and has a lot of bend´s and hammer on´s. I would say even for Paul this song isn´t easy. |

 | No they are right, The Boxer isn´t that easy. It´s very fast and you have to change the bass line after every repeat. It´s tricky and nothing for beginners. |
