The thing missing from Paul´s music is Barbarism, I think. Everything he does is immersed in civilization. The drums on The Obvious Child provide something that is missing.

This post does not make sense to me Proof. Olodum is civilization, not barbarism !

´Founded in 1979, its stated aims are to combat racism, to encourage self-esteem and pride among Afro Brazilians, and to fight for civil rights for all marginalized groups.´ (Wikipedia on Olodum)

agreed. I do think the point that simon makes is that the ´roots of rhythm´ can be traced back to the earliest music of africa and brazil (as demonstrated by Graceland and ROTS).

The title of ROTS comes from the fact that drums Patterns brought by slaves from Africa to the new world, beaten for deities, that Catholicism then authorized to be beaten for their saints in a form of syncretism. Therefore the title of the album.

When I think about barbarism, I think more of stuff like Himmler, Lenin & Stalin, etc. rather than Paul´s music.

I´m talking about the SOUND and EMOTIONS, not the culture.

Perhaps you mean primitivism rather than barbarian Proof. that word is derived from The hordes of armies sweeping down from northern Asia into the Roman empire it´s associated with destruction, lack of any type of culture or refinement.
