 | "a voice sugar coated with Love" attributed to God seems off. Paul´s music is all about discernment - it seems to me that his theology is missing a hard edge somewhere. Look around at these mean streets.... I strongly prefer Surprise, but this is still a nice record.

 | In the UK sugar coated tends to mean false - as if to make up for something or hide something and I think that´s the case in the lyric.
The voice is sugar coated with Love but, nevertheless, get in line and fill in the form. |

 | For me, it´s too early to say. I have only heard the new album about three times and that´s not enough to make a real comparison for me. But, Amulet and Questions For Angels are weaker track in my opinion and such weak tracks did not exist on Surprise. I still like Surprise better than So Beautiful Or So What....for now. |

 | Whats weak on Amulet?
I think also Surprise has it weaker tracks, ´I don´t believe´ or ´Beautiful´ (more the first one) have nothing special to me. For sure these are nice songs, but I only play them when I listen to the whole album. I don´t believe flows without any highlights.
Anyway, If I have to compare especially those 2 album, then I can clearly say that the new album sounds warmer to me, more positive, more natural. Real instruments, guitars and percussion give the songs a smooth and light feeling. On Surprise most songs sound very technical, even cold (Sure don´t feel like Love, Once upon a time, - also my favourite Another Galaxy sounds very clear/cold - but it fits very good on that song)
The new songs can become great live tracks at concerts, especially Love is eternal sacred light, Rewrite, Love and blessings. I think some of these songs have a feeling of ´earth´ in them. (SBOSW for example reminds me much more of Surprise)

 | I have never heard Surprise and don´t own it (probably shouldn´t admit this)but I think this latest album ranks with Simon´s best work -- hope it´s not a swan song, but if it is, it´s a beautiful one. This one seems to have a musical theater influence -- long numbers with multiple transitions and complicated arrangements. I like Love in Hard Times and Dazzling Blue the best. Think this album has the emotional intensity, good songwriting, skillful use of collaborators, and careful attention to detail that have always characterized Simon´s best work. What amazes me the most is his ability to bounce back repeatedly from failures and career setbacks thirty-five or forty years after being dismissed by many as "washed up." |

 | I think in this song, it´s ironic. This is definitely not a "nice" song -- think it´s more of a Randy Newman thing. |

 | The above comment refers to "sugar coated with Love." |

 | Bodo, I guess we´ll have to agree to disagree. The songs you mentioned from Surprie are my favorites....:) absolutely brilliant in my opinion.
Just don´t like those two that much ...yet. Again, I have only listed to the album about three times and that´s not enough for me to make a definate opinion. I Love most of the songs on the new album like Getting Ready, The Afterlife and a song that´s growing on me a lot is Love % Blessings.
Surprise, at this stage, is still a better album in my opinion.

 | David from London says ..
What´s weak on Amulet?? I´m afraid that it sounds like a guitar doodle to me....There is no clear melody, it just wanders around. It is pleasant sounds going in no clear direction and to no clear purpose. Well you did ask...
We know Paul can fingerpick a guitar...but Amulet sounds like elements of Can I Forgive Him? from Capeman but without a vocal track.
nb I Love the new album, there are many great tracks, and the lyrics are great throughout. But i do agree with the previous poster that Amulet and Questions for Angels are melodically weak, as imho is Love In Hard Times which seems to use melody lines from Darling Lorraine at some of the start/stop points.
Great sounds, strong lyrics, rhythmically a thrill throughout but i don´t hear strong melody to match the strong lyrics in the slower tracks, and Amulet is nice but inconsequemntial - i think Paul should have used it as a lead-in to Questions for the Angels, but not credited it on the track-list. |

 | Lyrically, the new album has a similiar theme, Ghod, which is a bit unusual. Theme is good but too many songs have the same theme and I guess I miss the variety, lyrically, of the other albums. |
