 | a website I used to visit about Bonanza (a 1960s western tv show)is gone because it was hacked into by DDOS and the web manager decided it was too vulnerable to have this happen again and too expensive to protect against DDOS based on the type of site. You could post pictures and stories and it had forums. Not really any different from these PS & AG & S&G sites that I have been on. So anyone know about this DDOS?

 | DDOS means distributed denial of service. Basically it´s somebody or some people deciding they want to take down a site, so they get lots of computers (mostly other people´s computers infected with viruses) to visit the site again and again at the same time. It overworks the systems and brings them to their knees. It´s also very much illegal.
Usually DDOS are done by either criminal gangs or teenage geeks with issues. I´m very surprised a site about an Old TV show would be targeted. Most sites aren´t particularly well protected, per se, except to the extent that they´re unlikely to be targeted. Most hosts do work to stop these incidents though, so site owners aren´t typically left on their own.
It does strike me as strange a site about an old TV show would be targeted. Maybe somebody was banned from the forum and took it to heart? |

 | I also do not believe a DDOS attack would be planned against a Bonanza website ;-)
You have heard of the last DDOS attacks when wikileaks was attacked by the US gov. and companies like paypal. Hackers started a DDOS attack against credit card institutes.
Usually you need thousands of computers to start that attack - and no one can protect a website from that, as it is not a virus or something, it is just that thousands of visitors come at the same time.
Only really big systems like google, microsoft or amazon are secure against those attacks, because they have really big server-farms.
Also a DDOS attack will not cost you anything (if you do not sell a product on your website and so buyers cant reach you) I think. The site is just not working anylonger.
I do not believe the DDOS story. If you run a fansite (like this one) you usually get copyright problems. |

 | Thanks for the responses-this is copied from the webmaster´s email to the forum members.
"On April 9, Bonanza World was the target of a massive DDOS attack that not only crippled the site and server but caused widespread damage. My webhost initially suspended the site to stop the attack but in assessing the problem and security dangers they have now removed the site entirely from their servers to protect not only their equipment, but other sites on the same network. |

 | If it was one of those 10$ per month hosters than nothing of that is true. They just suspend sites when they start to have a little bit more traffic (means 2000 or more visitors a day)
This is what happened to paul-simon.info too 2 years ago.
These companies are unbelievable bad. A normal company would offer a better plan, but they do not have any time for customer relations, so they simple delete the page automatically.

 | Now that I am thinking, all these websites that I visit, are they all hosted by a hosting company? How would someone just put a website on the internet, is it possible to do that? My horse association has a website, (laugh-I am the web manager!). We pay a yearly fee of $120 USD to network solutions inc and then I go in and put pictures and news items on the templates Network provides us and then hit the "publish" button and, presto, a website! So far network solutions go hit by a virus and we got it. My website became filled with arabic letters and pictures of soldiers. But I was told to go back to a saved website date of more than two weeks and everything seemed to be Ok. |

 | You can use your own computer to host a website but it would be slow for everybody trying to be visit. It would also slow down your internet connection and could violate the terms and conditions of your ISP. So most websites are hosted by a web hosting company, unless they´re big enough to do it themselves (Google, Facebook, etc). |
