 | Maybe with a Bob Dylan duet, he would have had his 5 stars with RS (joke). |

 | I don´t think is a joke, when they give stars to Dylan and Springsteen it fels they have 1 + in thei back. So if there album is 3 they get 4. |

Just found this one, and I´m only on the first paragraph but enthralled. Paul Simon recorded various sounds to layer the album that I hadn´t even registered. There´s the grunting of wildebeests in "Rewrite"! |

 | Hi mog, thanks for this really profound and illustrative review. I tried the German tanslation widget first. It was awful! But the English translation worked surprisingly good.
I agree with you to be careful when it comes to review the work of an icon such as Paul Simon. Maintenance History weights heavy and expectations on a new album are immense.
Your review filled my mind with a lot of ideas and questions but also with disagreement at some points. Interpretation of lyrics mainly. For example I think there isn´t a gloomy mood or atmosphere to be found. Maybe I will come back to you later again if you are interested in discussing lyrics (and I´m able to phrase all this in Engish anyway).
I´m not really deep in American (Rock-)Music or artists, Paul Simon is a great exception. Normally my interests compass nearly solely British stuff. So I was really glad to hear more about the American sources and influences from you.
This is from the other review, mentioned by Mike below (or above from this point of view):
While he´s no hippie nostalgic, he misses the impactful music of his youth.
PS:
"We used to look to songs to address what went on in the culture," he says. "The ´60s was a rare period, I guess, because that never returned. If that form of songwriting were to keep evolving, where could it go? That´s my question to myself."
and:
"I´m on a certain path, and I want to see where it goes, even if everyone is off somewhere else. I´m not following anybody."
In my opinion these are important quotes to get a glimpse of his intensions.

 | From the USA today:
"No caffeine. No dairy products. No sugar. No alcohol. I don´t smoke. The caffeine was tough. I´ll go eight, nine months without it and fall off the wagon. When I do, I can hear it."
My God ! What is left with as source of pleasures in life ? Oh yeah, sex. |

 | Well the dairy thing is a result of those calcification deposits he had back in the 1970´s. He´s obviously been really motivated to take care of himself and as many reviews have said, he´s one of the few musical legends who hasn´t lost his talent. |

 | To be honest Mog, I don´t understand your criticism. Paul can do what ever he wants in his life, he doesn´t have to justify himself. If he enjoys life without these things who are we to judge that.

 | My opinion: As Paul said it is tough and ´he fell off the wagon´ I can not understand his self-torture.
If you do not go into any extrems (drinking daily, having 5 coffes a day, smoking every day) I would say it does not help a lot to quit all those things, while you still long for them.
Of course he can do whatever he wants. But I have a feeling that somehow he wont be the guy I want to hang out with for a longer time ;-)
And I would like to know the reasons why he is doing that. Whenever you hear of very very Old people when they have been asked what they do to stay so young, most of them answer that the never quit any of those things. So I guess it is not a way of extending your life (while drinking a lot of alcohol sure is a way of to make it shorter)

 | Sorry, I missed one sentence: It´s all about the voice?
Hm. Okay fine ;-)
I do not know anything about that, but I am scared about the fact that dairy products have a influence on our voice :-
