 | I listened to the whole thing in my living room.
A feast to listen. Lazy ears are not welcome, to say the least ! Everywhere, it is full of subtle sounds and instruments, changes in the percussion Patterns or effects, etc.
´Love and Hard Times´ is quite amazing to listen to ! I am not sure I would have followed with LIESL right after (maybe the 3 ballads together?), but most people nowadays do not listen like I did today.
The catchiest are GRFCD, Afterlife and title-track. Are followed by Dazzling Blue and Rewrite.
On Amulet, maybe I would have invited Souza to join, although it is good to hear Paul´s discreet humming.
LIESL = pure exploration of where a song could lead, change, etc. I still do not enjoy the part after God talking to us and I would have liked if he had made the great country-blues lick coming back toward the end, but...
´Love and Blessings´ is another strange piece, almost flawless.
I kind of understand the point of recapitulation of career in this album. Lots of ingredients are indeed there. |

 | Thank you so much,James. What a privilege to get a preview of this amazing album. There is a lot to digest in all of these songs - I will be listening and thinking about the songs for a long time. Thanks again. |

 | My favourite songs so far in order
1. Love is eternal
2. Love and blessings (doo woop part yeah)
3. Dazzling Blue
4. Love and hard times
5. So beautiful
6. Rewrite
7. Afterlife
8. Questions for the angles
9. Getting ready
Amulet... not sure, I rarely listen to instrumental songs very often. His guitar playing is outstanding anyway.
I prefer the more complex songs with changes.

 | Love the album, and I can´t wait to drive around listening to it. This is really pushing up there as possibly my favorite solo album by him. Just fantastic and pleasant to hear. I was delightfully surprised that "Questions For The Angels" sounds like a newer mix, with a few subtle changes to the 2009 single. Not sure about my favorite yet, but the tracks are all strong and I love "Dazzling Blue" and "Love Is Eternal Sacred Light."
I woke up this morning with the "Ain´t no song like an Old song, Charlie" part of "Love and Blessings" stuck in my head. |

 | I think I´m going to be a lone voice here but on first listen the album left me disappointed. Most of the songs (Questions for the Angels and Love in Hard Times aside) feel underdeveloped and fragmentary. Also lyrically Simon isn´t as sharp as he used to be. Just compare the narrative sweep of Hearts And Bones with the throw away lines in the title track.
Now before everyone gets angry, let me be clear that Simon is without doubt one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th Century. But I can´t escape the feeling that from You´re the One onwards his music has lacked the clarity and purpose of his earlier solo work. Paul Simon is a genius who`s found personal and professional contentment in his later years. But happiness, as they say, writes white

 | Do not feel alone. As I mentionned already, I feel some laziness in the lyrics side as well.
And between us, it is not just you mention God, Evil, and Love a number of times that you make something interesting or really deep. |

 | underdeveloped and fragmentary ..
so you sure have examples for more complex songs, with more changes and influences by other music streams, and more small details. |

 | Music needs time... people these days feel the need to be satisfied immediately. No matter what. Silly really. The best things come to those who wait. Still don´t like it? Hey ho, there´s no antidote for taste.
As a great man once said: "That´s your opinion, and I respect that". PS on SNL :-) |

 | I feel like I´m listening to a completely different album than mog and the forum guest! The lyrics are some of if not THE BEST lyrics of his career. As for calling the title track "throw away" material... What on earth are you talking about! lol If that´s throw away material then so is 90% of Paul´s work! I can usually see where people are coming from when they don´t like one of his albums, but I have no clue where you guy´s are coming from. But variety is the spice of life so I guess differing opinions are fine. lol |
