The Harmony Game tells the story behind Simon and Garfunkel´s Bridge Over Troubled Water, an album shrouded in rock n´ roll mythology with legendary tales of inspiration, innovation and separation. This spectacular 70+ minute documentary includes archival footage and brand new interviews with Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel discussing the creation and reception of Bridge Over Troubled Water, along with several of the duo´s collaborators from the period: Roy Halee (co-producer/engineer), Hal Blaine (drums), Joe Osborn (bass guitar), Jimmie Haskell (arranger), and Mort Lewis (manager).

Charles Grodin told the story of the Bell Telephone special in his book "It Would Be So Nice If You Weren´t Here." (The book is one of the funniest, most well-told books I´ve ever read) One of the things that Grodin mentions is that Robert Drew ("the king of video verite`) became infatuated with the song "Bridge Over Troubled Water" during the recording process. Drew decided to make the TV special about the "making of a song" and sort of went off on his own. His film was never utilized as part of the actual special. I wonder if this is the long-lost Robert Drew footage. "The harmony game" is a phrase Art Garfunkel uttered during the actual special that was broadcast.

Royd: I seem to remember a scene from Songs of America with Art and Paul in a car or something...and Art says something like "When you´re in the harmony game..." Paul just gives Art this really weird look and says, "The harmony game?" At least that´s what it sounded like to me...the sound wasn´t so hot.

Just watched it again. Your recall is spot on neongoddess. They then go on to talk about Beethoven´s 200th birthday and America´s 200 th birthday.

Brenda: the thing I remember most about that clip is Paul looking at Artie like he´s very strange for saying that, lol!

well, I think this is Artie speaking a little ironically. He is using the word "game" in the sense that someone might be in the textile game or the insurance game, so he is sort of suggesting that they are peddling harmony. I think he probably thought is was a funny way of expressing being in the music industry. I´m sure it caught Paul´s ear as it is such an unusual way for a musician to talk, as opposed to going on about ones craft and art and so on.

kind of like google, by underlining every third word in a person´s thoughts and turning it into a hyperlink for a car ad, is in the advertising game, or the redirection game in that they think as your are reading along in a comment about Paul Simon, you may click on one of their little hyperlinks ("my, that is an interesting word, let me just click on it") and be redirected to buy a car. Presto, a Song About The Moon.
