 | Which do you prefer?
I think I like Surprise a little better, but it´s really close.

 | I like Surprise a little better too, but YTO is like a drug. If you start listening to it, it´s hard to stop and switch over to a different album. |

 | I liken YTO to Hourglass by James Taylor... quiet and understated pieces of work, and I strongly agree on the ´Drug´ thing. Surprise was a bit more in your face than YTO.
Darling Lorraine is a masterpiece, especially the live in Paris version. |

 | Yup, Darling Lorraine is great. Hurricane Eye gets overlooked - I like that one.
However, James Taylor - as a matter of law - sucks. : ) |

 | "Surprise" is the clear winner for me.
It was my favorite album of the last decade. I think it´s Paul´s best album since "Rhythm Of The Saints", and for me it sits with "Rhythm Of The Saints", "Graceland" & "Hearts & Bones" as one of the four best solo albums he´s ever done (and I´d also say those four solo albums are as great as the best Simon & Garfunkel albums).
"You´re The One" is a fine album too. It was a real grower for me. I´m just home from work & can´t quite figure out if I´d place in the second tier (with "Paul Simon" & "There Goes Rhymin´ Simon"), or I´m thinking more likely in the third tier (with "Still Crazy After All These Years" & "One-Trick Pony")- I should clarify that I´m a huge fan & that any of these albums would figure into probably the top ten, or at least top twenty of the decade they were released in- if not being #1...I like "Songs From The Capeman", & think it´s very good, with great moments on it, but do think it´s his least realized work...Love to hear all the extra stuff that´s never come out someday (hopefully on one of the new re-issues if we´re lucky), but that´s another tale. |

 | This is a really close call.
I like them both, but they don´t match Rhythm Of The Saints which is the peak of his songwriting.
I thing Suprise has some real gems - especially his vocals are so great and youthful sounding and there are some really good guitar parts.
However, You´re The One I think has better songs (except Look At That) so I vote You´re The One a better by a whisker. |

 | For me, his best music is that which approaches the poetic. So . . . Rhythm and Surprise are amazing. YTO was a good album - but don´t think it struck the cord of ´greatness´ that Surprise did.
To the person who tiered the solos:
Tier 1 = Graceland, ROTS, Surprise, H&B.
Tier 2 = PS, Rhymin´ Simon, Still Crazy.
Tier 3 = Capeman and OTP (both of which after all were movie/stage ´projects´. |

 | @ Phil- But you forgot to rank YTO...Your four faves are my four faves, and we are pretty close to agreeing on the rest as well...curious to see where you put YTO...I´m still not sure which level it falls at for me, but I tend towards to the latter a bit lately (though I think in my rankings of solo albums here I put in the higher- oh well- they are all great)...
my list goes
1- H&B, G, ROTS, S
2-PS, TGRS, YTO?
3-SCAATY, OTP, YTO?
4-SFTC |

 | ROTS was his peak lyrically. The poetry on that record is the best you´ll ever find in pop songs. |

 | Hi Proof, we´ll have to agree to disagree on the JT front... I think he´s great, and have been a fan all my life, just like PS.
I always think it´s best not to criticize anyone else´s taste in music, because it´s so personal and subjective, though I find your views interesting.
On the Art Garfunkel forum, they didn´t know who JT was when he was singing ´Crying In The Rain´ with Art on the ´Across America´ DVD. Were these people born in a box, or just very (very) dumb? JT & PS both got their breaks in the UK, and we Love them both... :-) |
