 | Paul Simon and Neil Diamond each have a famous song called America. If you respond emotionally more to Paul Simon´s America, you are probably liberal. If you respond emotionally more to Neil Diamond´s America, you are DEFINITELY conservative.

 | I have never heard the one by Neil Diamond, but Love the one by PS. The similarly named American Tune has a very nice melody that is reminiscent of the traditional hymn Herzliebster Jesu that was part of the St. Matthew Passion. I´m not sure if this beautiful melody was composed by Bach or came from an even earlier source. |

 | oops right composer but wrong song -- I´m thinking the O Sacred Head now Wounded (O Haupt woll Blut und Wunden) which was also used by Bach and PS. This song has a long "borrowing" tradition! |

 | The melody of American Tune/O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden was composed in 1601 by Hans Leo Hassler. The final German lyrics are by Paul Gerhard and added to the melody in 1656 by his friend J. Crueger.
Bach changed the melody a little bit and used it not only for the St. Matthew Passion but also otherwise, f.e. in his Christmas Oratorium. |

 | Of course the "And I dreamed..." -section is by Paul Simon alone. |

 | That´s a good question. In the Southern U.S., where I live, politics, music, and religion tend to get very intertwined. Of course, liberal and conservative are very vague terms! |

 | In my mind many of the traditional church hymns, and the African American style of preaching, have a strong emotional connection with MLK and the civil rights movement. Of course MLK was quite politically liberal.
I don´t see America as a political song at all -- except maybe in a very indirect way. I think think PS has wisely not gotten too involved in politics! |

 | many years ago (mid 70s) I was at a museum displaying arifacts and history of the Statue of Liberty. In a constant background musical loop was ´American Tune´, out just a couple of years. I wondered if the curator understood the significance of the lyrics (disillusionment) or assumed with such a title the song - and reference to the statue - was patriotic. |

 | I think alot of what Paul Simon does is moderate leaning slightly to the left. |
