I know some of the people here will be interested in this. James Taylor has started posting guitar lessons on his website of the work he does. This is such a treat for his fans!

Hi Mike, I just came across these yesterday... aren´t they brilliant!

I thought the one about making his nails harder with fiberglass was excellent. I´ve been wondering how to make my nails stronger for finger style guitar for years... I´m too sacred to go to a salon and ask for false nails! I wonder what Paul´s technique is? I´m off to learn ´Little Wheel´ now :-)

I Love the idea but the two of us who
once tried to play guitar both said we really need a beginners book. And it´s my left hand fingers that hurt, what do you do about them?

If you´re just beginning, your left hand fingers will go through a stage where they really do just hurt when you press them on the strings. It happens when you haven´t played for a while and need to get your calluses back. If you ignore the pain and continue playing or even just making the shapes of chords on the strings for practice, your calluses will harden and presto, no pain.

I´ve tried several times over 25 years to learn guitar but always gave up. This time I persevered past the pain threshold now can try to play for ages with no pain. But I think you need to put in so much practice to be any good, I think I´ll give up again.

Does it really matter if you´re not very good so long as you enjoy what you are doing? I´d have given up a long time ago if I´d have thought being good at it was compulsary! So long as I don´t inflict my fumbled chords and out of tune wailing to anyone else there´s no problem.

Wow! I´ve been away for awhile and in the interim,Sweet Baby has started giving guitar lessons. So cool! About fingernails,I wore mine long for 15 years and treated them with kid gloves, but you´ve only got to make the bed in the morning and catch one on in the stitching on your doona, and you can´t play guitar properly for a week or so. 4 years ago I started wearing false nails and I´ll never go back. They can sound a little soft in comparison to real nails, but I overcome this by applying a fine layer of super glue to the playing edge of each nail. Once it dries,if it needs it,you can lightly file and polish it off to a smooth edge. That´s my hint anyway.

And I always thought Ian was a mans name! Whatever about worrying about the state of your nails - making beds is not something I associate with the male of the species.

Oh no. Not that again: I´ve been derided several times an account of my care for my nails. It´s not about being pretty, sir.

It wasn´t Ian´s manicure worries I was commenting on - it was the breaking a nail while making a bed - couldn´t see an Irish man admitting to either!! (or doing it!!)
