Goos news all around. A solo tour becoming more real and a release date and tracklist for the new album. The titles we didn´t know so far sound very intriguing.
I am curious about "Amulet". On the Masterworks for Marimba the song is 3.21 long. I guess on Paul´s album it will be the guitarpiece.

The album clocks it at less than 40 minutes. After five years of waiting, I would have wanted a few more songs. However, typically the shorter an album the better it is and the better reviewed it is since the artist typically leaves out the weaker material.

However, Paul has not released that many solo abums in 30 years and is going to be 70, so I still would have wanted more music. That said, he is one of the few artists that releases albums where every song is typically brilliant.

Also would have preferred for ´Getting Ready for Christmas Day´ to be a bonus track on a deluxe version of the album. While the song is pleasant, I have a feeling I will be listening to the album from track 2 to 10 after initial spins.

It´s almost as short as an album by Garfunkel... ;-)

Putting the Christmas single first sounds like a really bad descicion. I suspect that will change on the final track listing.

Well...what can you say. I am also not sure if GRFCD should be the first track. A lot of people (which buy CDs in a store) still rate an album from the first track they hear. And I can see that there are mixed feelings about this song (Love or hate).

For example, I think The Obvious Child was really a winner, this as track no. 1 made more people buy the album, because they expected more of that (which the rest could not fullfill!!, but I love the rest more)

Thats where I belong had to be track no 1, because it was opening the album - but I do not think it was a good marketing decission.

How can you live in the NE was a perfect opener IMO - this first guitar riff made you buy the album.
(while I love the tracks, Sure don´t feel like love or Another Galaxy would have been the worst decission IMO)

Capeman had to be in that order, but Adios Hermanos shocked me first. Too much (too long) a-capella song (and the rest of the album had no a-capella song). IMO Born in Puerto Rico would have been a better track no. 1

1:36 - is there any shorter track by Paul Simon solo... ??

Hm, I checked it now, the shortest REAL song released on a solo album was Killer wants to go to College I (1:51) - but even there I would say it is just so short because you have KWTGTC II.

On the other hand many S&G songs are very short (Feelin groovy 1:41), Song For The Asking 1:42)
Interestingly I never really realized that. It seems as if in that time songs had to be much shorter (radio airplay time). And a 4 minute version of those songs would be really boring.

The only real and well known shorter songs by Paul Simon solo are Gumboots (2:43) and Old(2:17)

His longest track is Darling Lorrain (6:39), followed by Can I forgive him(6:02)
- The first one never get´s boring (has so many changes in mood), the 2nd one is too long IMO.

I also think (and already said) that Getting ready for Christmas day is too long, at some part between verse 2 and 3 it gets boring. (4:06 - always the same rhythm and melodie... no interlude), but I guess most people might not agree on that. ;)

Amulet will be the shortest song Paul ever released (also compared to any S&G song)

Interestingly Paul said in a few interviews that his most prominent song (let´s say one of a handfull songs that will be remembered also in 1000 years) - Bridge - is too long.
But is that true? I do not think so, the song builds itself up from verse to verse, and has a final explosive moment - thats what a really good song needs I think. These parts like: ´...sail on silver girl´
´...and I´m going to Graceland´
´..this is how I Love you baby...´
´...send their battered dreams to..´
´..oh my god, the first love opens..´
´...oh my darling darling Sal...´
´...my eyes could clearly see, the..´

we could make a game out of that ;)

´I know a father who had a son...´

He said that about Slip Slidin´ Away too... One of my favourite songs...

Compared to ´Wednesday morning at 3am´, yes, it´s long, but not over long :-) He´s just very critical of himself, that´s all.

As an afterthougt, Harper´s album was about 40 minutes, and he said he learnt the art of crafting an album (the ´arc´ of an album as he put it) off his Dad.

Harper´s album is just over 30 minutes. About the same as the first three S&G albums. A CD can have 80 minutes, though...

I am fine with the album running time. I have never been a big fan of those CD´s who used to run for 75 minutes.

Quite difficult to keep one interested with good stuff for that period of time.

The LP running times were good formats !

As for Amulet, I would not be surprised if it is only instrumental.
