Add Jackson Browne at the end and I´d agree. Cat Stevens & James Taylor do certainly seem to be popular choices around here whenever I look at the fan database, and I agree. I do like both of them.

I heard a Cat Stevens/Yusuf interview recently where he mentioned Paul was an influence on him. It´s interesting because Paul Simon does so much musically - searching the world and using various styles, while it´s generally true of James Taylor that any song can be moved to another album and it´d fit. Cat did an album in Jamaica & Isitzo was experimental, but nothing to the extent Paul has over his career.

I agree with having Jackson Browne on the list, but not Cat Stevens or James Taylor. I would say number 2 would be McCartney, 3 Browne and 4 Al Stewart. Honorable mention to Leonard Cohen.

Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan (cant stand his voice but lyrics are great). Joni Mitchell deserves a mention. Al Stewart great but only really one good album. Cat Stephens - a bit too sweet for my liking. Honorable mention would be Paul Brady (Irish singer/songwriter)

Definitely agree with most of these. Bob Dylan´s "Blood On The Tracks" and Cat Stevens´ "Tea For The Tillerman" are two of my favorite albums.
For list of greatest songwriters I´d have to add in Donovan, Gordon Lightfoot, Woody Guthrie, John Denver. As too sweet as some people would put John Denver, I don´t know of any other artist who can describe nature, Love, and happiness all together in such a perfect way.

Scaaty, Al Stewart made only one good album? Modern Times and Famous Last Words are both great albums in my opinion.

And I still say that Mr. Zimmerman is way over-rated. I agree with you that his voice is almost unbearable.

The best singer/songwriter is of course Paul Simon. After Paul I can´t really make a top 3 or 5.

But I would like to add Stevie Wonder, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Willie Nelson, JJ Cale and Neil Diamond to the list of good songwriters.

I am also impressed by a few younger singer/songwriters, Jon Boden, Gary Stewart, Harper Simon and Edie Brickell.

In Europe, there is also really great pop/rock songwriters. Franco Branduardi or Angelo Branduardi are terrific. In English, specially Dylan, Paul Simon, Lennon & McCartney (the last one overall), Stevie Wonder. Behind them,Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, Jackson Browne, Roger Waters... - José Luis

Of course Ans Paul Simon is No 1 that on this site goes without saying.

Richard I just think that there is a sameness about Al stewarts songs that having "´the year of the cat" is enough in any ones collection (for cat lovers especially:)

I would agree about the American Pie album and would consider it one of the top albums of all times.

1. Paul Simon
2. Bob Dylan
3. Van Morrison

Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen, Joan Armatrading, Paul McCartney, Paul Brady, Ian Hunter, Robbie Robertson, Steve Winwood, Eric Clapton, Nick Lowe, Elton John/Bernie Taupin, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Carly Simon, Mark Knopfler, Johnny Clegg, Stevie Wonder, Chris Rea, Bruce Cockburn, Sting, Jimmy Cliff just to name a few!

Living a life without hearing the music of these people is to not really be living IMO!

Paul remains my favorite and I browse this site daily to be among likeminded people. In 1994 at the age of 13, Graceland was the first album I bought from a music club. Never heard of him prior to that year.

Oh, I couln´t just name 3. My top 3 would probably look like this:

1. Paul Simon, Billy Joel
2. Springsteen, Jackson Browne,
3. Neil Diamond

I wouldn´t put Elton in the list, because he doesn´t write his own lyrics. I Love his music though.
