 | I have just bought one of the promo CDs that were sent to radio stations.
I think this will be minimum impact on the environment as it will already have been manufactured and I will never throw it away.
The carriage from USA to UK will be a bigger impact but I doubt it takes much fuel to cope with the additional load of one CD and no more or less than a CD with 20 tracks. |

 | Isn´t it sad that the radio stations - instead of playing the CD - sell them on ebay...
GRFCD in my eyes really performed under the line of recognition, you can not even say people forgot very fast about it, most did not even realize it exists. In my eyes it performed like ´Citizen of the planet´ by S&G.
Will we remember that song in 2-3 years?
Or asked the other way around, was it worth producing TWO video clips for that song? Well, just for us, a handfull of fans on this board, maybe yes :-)

 | It is true that the song did not raise very high, and Paul decided himself a little late to get out of his reclusion to perform it live. The release + promotion had a last-minute feel.
But I think it is too early to judge the destiny of this song. The album, which includes it, will be released soon, and I expect the song to be played pretty much at each holiday season.
It will likely become a minor Simon hit, like Father and Daughter. |

 | Sorry mog, I really do not think so.
F&D got 20 times more reviews and airplay, Paul promoted it for several weeks on many TV shows, and in the end it was nominated for an Oscar.
AND: The song is still available as a mp3 download on amazon, and ranks actually on place ~5500 (today) there, while GRFCD ranks on place 18.000 today, and that 2 months after it´s release.., and the other song beeing 8 years Old.
I would not count on the idea that the song will be played on any radio station next Christmas (except they have the idea of playing the most obscure and rarely played Christmas songs maybe in a special show, you never know) |

 | Song is still available on I Tunes too. Wouldn´t the fact that the song was available free on Paul´s,and a few other websites affect he number of people who would buy it? I do not think it could ever achieve the sales of Father and Daughter and Daughter as it is a Christmas song and seasonal.
Anyway I do not care where it ranked it is a great song . The days of Paul having a number one hit have long gone but that does not matter to me . Surprise did not exactly become a great hit but it was ,imo. his best ever work. Just keep making great music Paul.

 | I got it played on a very popular show (for the 40+ age group) on irish radio and it went down like a lead balloon. even the producer who is a Paul Simon fan didn´t get it! |

 | I didn´t like it at all the first time I heard it because it sounded like it was making fun of African American preaching. I knew that PS would not do this and had a better reaction after reading more about this song on the Spanish PS web site. |

 | Brenda, I presume the album didn´t perform well in Australia, but in the UK Surprise got to number four in the album charts and stayed there for two weeks.
A Top 5 hit is not bad for an artist who first had hits in the 1960s (or earlier if you count Tom & Jerry)
It is a shame that the Christmas single didn´t achieve more airplay. It is a good deal better than that dirge from Coldplay that was dire. I will be receiving my CD single soon and I will definitely be playing it next year. I´ll have the album by then but it will be easy to grab the one-track disc and give it a spin.
Agree with Bodo - the promo CDs being sold on eBay are being described as ´unplayed´ - what a shame! Even Radio 2 which is a big champion of Paul´s music and responsible for the charting of Father & Daughter in 2006 (when its extensive airplay would have counted towards its position) did not play this song.

 | Hi Matthew ,just replied to your post and it did not register so will try again.
It is great that Surprise did so well in the UK and the States . He did promote it well with touring and television appearances but it has been a long long tine since he performed solo in Australia{1991}which may account for it not charting here. He did tour here in 2009 with S and G and it was a huge success. Did do a few solo numbers though and the applause went through the roof,as they say.
In am at a loss to understand why BBC 2 did not play GRFCD if they normally do play Paul´s songs. Would Love to know the reason why. I listen to a fair amount of Sydney radio at work and S and G and PS songs are often played but with the exception of F and D have never heard anything later than Julio or Love Me Like A Rock era.
Enjoy your CD . l I would love one too Will keep watching E Bay . At least they will end up being appreciated. |

 | Ok, so....GRFCD = flop then ?
You may be right, but I still think that we should wait for the new album to come out and its aftermath to pronounce ourselves on it. |

 | You would think Martin Luther King day would be a prime time to release the title track as the next single... But I guess not. |

 | Always on the lookout for PS songs on the radio (or anywhere) but must be listening to wrong stations and only listen while driving, but I heard ´Late In The Evening´ at a supermarket other day while on holidays in a country town. Actually took me a little while to work out what the song was, so surprised to hear it. |

 | I Missed this comment when it originally was published:
Irish Times 10/12/2010
Skipping quickly over the Christmas single about Nick Clegg with the very naughty title, the most interesting musical offering this year comes from, of all, people, Paul Simon. Set over a Graceland- era rhythm and featuring a sample of gospel artist Reverend JM Gates, the lyrics steer well clear of the usual concerns.
`From early in November to the last week in December, I got money matters weighing me down. Well the music may be merry, but it`s only temporary, I know Santa Claus is comin` to town. In the days I work my day job, in the nights I work my night, but it all comes down to working man`s pay. I`m getting ready, getting ready for Christmas day.â? That`s the first verse; the second moves on to mentions of Pakistan and Iraq.
Musically eccentric and very zeitgeist-embracing, I`m Getting Ready for Christmas Day is the best thing Simon`s done in years and the pick of this year`s Christmas pops."
This was at the end of an article about the Xfactor dominating the Christmas No 1s
