I agree when you put it along with ´Outrageous´.
I like the melody of Outrageous a little bit more, but always had the feeling it is one of the weaker songs on Surprise. Although, it has a good guitar lick, and a nice break (God will, like he waters the flowers on the window sill...take me ...) thats great.

What I never liked was the synth-sound on Once upon a time there was an ocean (tööö töö tööö), but also this song had some interesting changes, bridges, melody breaks, and nice singin, and a wonderful ending verse with silence.

Sorry for that Christmas song, but it has nothing of that.

I expect that Questions for the angles will be one of the most wonderful songs on that album. And I am not sure if this was the final version we got a year ago (it sounded a little bit like a ´early take´ or unreleased version)

And I really thought that the sounds from ´Surprise´ had only been a period/experiment in Pauls career, and this album will be a Singer/Songwriter album, Paul with his Guitar...bringin us songs like Hearst and Bones.

Bof...

For once since the 2000, Paul has a nice, catchy track.

I hope he will get some airplay, and get the signal to anyone listening that he is back with a new album.

I am sure there will be plenty of other tracks where he will Surprise us with some sophisticated arrangments...there is room in my mind for a few more accessible tracks that get people interested a bit.

I like the synth-guitar sound on the track (the chords might too simple a bit, Paul felt the need to make it interesting !), but I am cautious a bit about the other noise-effects.

I think it is a good song, not a masterpiece but i will say it growing you more you listening to it, verse one is the strongest, and the guitar part after the first verse.

I enjoy the lyrics of this song, and I always like what Paul has to say in his music, but my only complaint is for the time given, there´s not that much said. It´s a busy piece, so I look forward to picking up on little details every time I listen to it. Plus, seeing as how Paul is an album writer, not a singles writer, I have a feeling it will find its place wherever he puts it.

I agree Mike, the song will probably fit well in an album. If you listen to the Rev. in the background coupled with Pauls lyrics it is great. Although I will agree with Bodo the melody is repetitive. Over all I enjoy it because it is a fun bouncy song, and that´s the way I like Christmas music to be.

So this song really is related to Rev. J.M. Gates?

But why?
Just found that title some days ago when I was trying to find out more about the new PS Song.
He even used parts of that "Getting´ Ready For Christmas Day"

I also think it´s a fun bouncy song but with some serious lyrics in it. Paul is talking about his nephew in the Iraq war. I like the lyric "for the power and the glory and the story of the Christmas day". The lyrics give you also an insight at how different people prepare themselves for Christmas day and what it means to them. I like Paul´s guitarplaying against the bouncy track and the very last sound makes me laugh :) I also like the added instruments in the second half of the song. The song doesn´t fit the bill for christmas shopping and drinking Glühwein (mulled wine) but it is very original :)

everybody lighten up!
First it´s only one song. You can pluck out a ´less than brilliant´ song out of any album. They tend to be those that try to hit the charts (Allergies, Outrageous).
Secondly - the best of Simon´s work must be listened to many times - it keeps growing, developing. So keep listening. Personlly, I think the Rev. Gates sampling is very cool.

Would anyone here be as kind as to upload the lyrics of this new song?
Thanks
And by the way I do Love it very much.
As usual in classic Siimon´s writing there is a duality between music (joy/happy/upbeat) and lyrics matter (deep/bittersweet/serious)

Yeah, the Reverend´s words move the song along to prepare for each of Paul´s verses, I like it. Haha can´t blame us for critiquing this to no end, it´s the first Paul Simon action we´ve seen in a while.

I have just listened to the new song. Loved it the first time I heard it. Being Old fashioned, I now want to buy it. An actual CD single please, not a download.

Also there is a reference to CP91 on that page in the link above. Very exciting if Sony manage to pull that off.
