 | The biography refers to Paul Simon´s depression, particularly after OTP and H&B didn´t fulfill sales expectations. I can´t help but think, in terms of absolute happiness, how actually being Paul Simon compares to fantasizing about being Paul Simon. The joke may be that the gap between those two things isn´t that great. I´m pretty happy, after all, and I´m relatively poor, talentless and only get laid intermittently. In his magnificent book, Money and the Meaning of Life, Jacob Needleman tells a story about his childhood friend (named Paul) who was wealthy and had every toy imaginable, but who Jacob (a poor kid) remembers has being cloaked in a kind of pathetic or tragic sadness as he lorded over his massive collection of electric trains and so forth. Life, the mystery.
