 | I missed it. Does anyone know if there is anything documented about the friendship between Paul and Oprah? Are they friends or is she just a fan? |

 | I found this bit of information relating Paul and Oprah.
WINFREY: I think -- I marvel every day of my life. Because first of all, I start out the day with a form of meditation or prayer. Some kind of thoughtful inward look at myself and something bigger than myself. I try to do that every day. Not just wow but marvel at this life. I mean, I was born in Mississippi in 1954. And all that means. There are people watching that knows what that means and people that don´t know what that means. Well, 1954, Mississippi was the most racist state in the United States. We had more lynchings in that state per county than any state in the union. And I was born during the year of Brown vs. Board of Education which was the year that really brought about a sense of hope to then colored people. We were called at the time. To believe that life could be better. That you would no longer have to go to a school that was segregated with you having books that were less than the other children. With you not having the right -- the proper facilities and the proper tools to which to learn. I was born in that year.
KING: And now look.
WINFREY: So, when I hear Paul Simon sing "Born At The Right Time" I think, he is singing about me.

I think she would relate personally to his music, if anyone saw Mississippi Burning (set in 1964) their treatment was horrendous.
Paul´s songs ´He Was My Brother´ and ´A Church Is Burning´ were about these sorts of incidents. Graceland still being her all-time favourite album and she´s now set up a school in South Africa to educate girls, I think his influence has been great. |

 | I sometimes wonder, if Paul would make a new album of such songs, just he and his guitar, some simple lyrics and melodies, wouldn´t this album become a really comeback hit for his career? I mean, instead of new experiments, complicated melodies and rhythms - this is was most of his fans from the 60´s and 70´s really would Love.
What do you think?
I guess it is not Pauls artistical style of development and demand to himself to do that, but on the other hand he always do such lovely songs when he pays tribute to someone else. |

 | Bodo,
I completely agree with you. I have often wished he would try to make another album like the Songbook, just him and guitar. I have been listening lately to the music that Johnny Cash recorded in that manner and it is very powerful. I believe that "Can I forgive him?" on the Capeman album is so powerful because it is just Paul and his guitar.
Well, the one thing we know is that the new album isn´t going to be this format. Maybe the next one.... |

 | One of the things I admire about Paul is his artistic style. I once found this description about his music and for me this is exactly why I never get tired of his albums.
"Actually one of the real qualities of most of his albums is how even after multiple playing there always seems to be some subtle new information and interpretation to be discovered. This is because his music is full of restless questioning, contradictions, and multiple meanings. And his drawing on new musical influences and collaborations has always been with genuine empathy and Love of the music."
The other wonderful thing is that you can make your own albums of Paul´s music because it´s all in there, for the happy mood, the dance mood, the quiet mood, the sad mood, if you need inspiration, comfort ASO.
I know, we all feel that Paul hasn´t got the recognition he deserves, especially from the media who very oft talk about Bob Dylan being the best. (like this awful Mr.Eliot) Although I must say Bob does get some critical reviews in the media over here.
But I think Paul get´s a lot of admiration and recognition from lot´s of other people, that´s why he is asked so much for tributes and why he get´s so many honors these days.
Paul can always write an album with more simple songs which can still be powerful but somehow I see that as the last album of his career and I want to delay that moment as long as possible.

 | Oh, I hope you are really wrong Ans - but only with your last comment ;-)
I see no reason for Paul to stop writting and recording - as long as his voice is in good shape (and it is)

 | Lol Bodo, I too hope Paul will write and record for a long time and yes, his voice is still in good shape.
I have to say that I like Paul´s first album Songbook very much and his tribute perfomances, just Paul and his guitar are great.
But writing simple songs give me the idea of "I can´t think of anything new so let´s write simple songs and then retire."

 | I thought I was the only one who
thought he looked nervous. I mean I
can´t see a performer can be nervous
in that situation, he knew Oprah
would Love the song and so would the
audience. I know I loved it, but I
can´t think of why he would be nervous. |

 | I didn´t think he looked nervous. I just thought he looked a bit shy when the crowd was responding wildly. I thought his voice wsas excellent! |
