The original version of "Gone At Last" featured Bettie Midlers vocals in place of the relased Phobie Snow version. My question does Bet´s vocal version still exist and if so is it possible to upload to the forum.
Over to you all

 | I don´t think it went that far, I mean that BM would have recorded vocals for it.
I might be wrong though... |

 | IIRC Paul suggested the idea to her but either disinterest or scheduling conflicts caused it to never happen |

 | No,I think it actually got to the recording stage,or at the very least, the arrangement stage, which is where things went pear shaped. I think Bette wanted it to be a Calypso rhythm,or something like that, and that didn´t fit with Paul´s vision of his song. |

 | I heard somewhere that the two record companies couldn´t come to an agreement and Paul got tired of waiting and moved on which in turn ticked off Midler. |

 | Yes,that fits actually. I remember an interview with Midler, possibly Rolling Stone magazine, where she recounts various relationships she´s had and Paul was definitely one of them. Dylan was another and I remember her recalling of Dylan that ´we had a few quick gropes in the front seat of his car´. Lol,she also commented that Bobby wasn´t much of a driver. Both of these relationships were during the 70´s. |

 | In the 1975 BBC Radio One Simon & Garfunkel special, Phil Ramone talked about recording "Gone At Last" with Bette Midler; Ramone said "that´s a locked trunk that we´ll probably never open for anybody." Paul Simon talked about it (I think in the Playboy interview but maybe somewhere else) as being recorded with a Latin rhythm. Midler claimed that Simon never told her that he wasn´t using her version and that when she heard the single on the radio she was stunned. That might explain why - at the end of her duet with Bob Dylan on "Buckets of Rain" - Dylan says "I think Paul Simon should have done this one." |
