Hi ! I´m a long time fan and have heard the the Hearts And Bones album was originally intended to be a Simon & Garfunkel album. Why was it changed to a Paul Simon Album ? Curious for the reason behind it. One of my favorite Paul Simon albums.

Nick from Widnes England Writes:

Caught up in the Simon and Garfreunion Tour that came as a result of the 19th eptember 1981 Central Park Concert, Paul tried to re arrange his solo album as a duo album.

Hearts And Bones contained some very personal songs which Pual had written about the break up of his 2nd marriage to carrie Fisher ie the title track. Also the fact that to include Artie´s vocal meant key change to the songs.

It is interesting to note that they included some of the songs in the reunion concerts. However at the last moment Paul removed Art´s vocals from the album and released it as a solo recording.

Some of the original recordings with AG on are still around.

Also Art was trying to edit every word of his parts and time was running out. Paul just got disgusted and cut out all Art´s part. And--he did feel the songs were too personal. It is my favorite album.

Well, just for the record: H&B was released in November 1983, PS divorced CF in July 1984. Some of the songs clearly touches subjects that can be traced to PS´ relationsship to CF, but to say they are about the break up of their marriage is probbably a little misleading :-)

Thanks a lot for the replies!

Very interesting to hear to stories about H&B. It was my first Paul Simon album and still one of my favorites.

It seems very personal and not really like a Simon&Garfunkel albim. I prefer Paul solo anyway.

Thanks!

a lot of the songs relate to more PS´s first marriage with Peggy Harper - which people seem to overlook for some reason!

Bodo everytime I go to write something I´m asked to update my details - nothing PS related has happened in my life recently so I have nothing to add:((

"Cars Are Cars" by S&G on YouTube.
You might also find a version of "Think To Much (a)" and one or two other numbers of the H&B-Album there.

That version of ´Cars Are Cars´ on YouTube sounds more like a live version from the 1983 tour than it does a studio version. Either way it represents what the song sounds like with a contribution from Art.

Very interesting article but what information does it pertain? Personally since H&B is my all time favourite PS album and was instrumental in changing me from an S&G fan to a totally PS fan - I hope Think too much remains in the vaults.

Have a listen to the the CP92 album on good speakers on high volume esp CD2 - and see how complex and deep the PS songs are (1st 5 0r 6) compared to the S&G songs that make up the second half of CD2 - no comparison!!

Very interesting article. I agree with your comments Scaaty and think that Paul´s songwriting has evolved tremendously since the S&G days. I think that already by 1983, Paul Simon was used to write songs for himself rather than for S&G which have a different structure to them.

I would be very surprised if we ever get a whole new album by S&G. Perhaps a new song or two by S&G but not a whole album.

Well, I remember we already got a new S&G song in 2003 - and it was completely uninteresting to anyone outside the fan universum.

I know, the song was already written 20 years before, but that does not matter as only we know that.
The point is - Paul does not write S&G songs anymore. He does not even write these kind of PS songs/hits he is became famous for.
