Let´s start with America
"Let us be lovers we´ll marry our fortunes together"
(MONEY AND LOVE)
"I´ve got some real estate here in my bag"
(REAL ESTATE IS UNIQUE, NON-FUNGIBLE)
So we bought a pack of cigarettes and Mrs. Wagner pies
(FOOD AND PLEASURE)
And we walked off to look for America
(MAKING A CONCEPT REAL)
"Kathy," I said as we boarded a Greyhound in Pittsburgh
(GREY - AMBIGUITY / PITTSBURGH - ANYWHERE)
"Michigan seems like a dream to me now"
(MEMORY)
It took me four days to hitchhike from Saginaw
(BEGGING BOWL)
I´ve gone to look for America
Laughing on the bus
Playing games with the faces
(OTHER PEOPLE AS OBJECTS)
She said the man in the gabardine suit was a spy
I said "Be careful his bowtie is really a camera"
(WOULDN´T IT BE FUNNY IF THESE PEOPLE HAD INNER LIFE, BUT THEY DON´T)
"Toss me a cigarette, I think there´s one in my raincoat"
"We smoked the last one an hour ago"
(OUT OF PLEASURE OBJECTS)
So I looked at the scenery, she read her magazine
(SILENTLY TOGETHER AND APART)
And the moon rose over an open field
(SOMETHING COMING WITHOUT BORDERS, SCARY AND PRETTY)
"Kathy, I´m lost," I said, though I knew she was sleeping
(SLEEPING = UNAWARE OF IMPORTANT THINGS)
I´m empty and aching and I don´t know why
(ENDLESS SEA OF LONGING)
Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike
(EVERYONE WANTS THE SAME THINGS)

| Can anyone tell me what "real estate here in my bag" means. I feel dumb,but I have been trying to figure it out for years. That is one of the things that make Paul´s music great. I am still pondering meanings after all these years. |

I´ve always imagined it to be a bag of property or belongings.
I don´t analyse the songs so much. I think ´America´ is a beautiful Love song with wonderful imagery about two traveling soul mates. Wonderful! |
