 | What would have happend to Mr. Simon´s career if no one had given him that tape?
Well, he loves the sound of South African (and Brazilian) music, so maybe he just would have found it one way or another. He probably would have done the Capeman no matter what.
Just wondering...

 | Touring together with Artie since 1988... ?
And releasing 5 more S&G albums :)
I would definately say this tape was important. I am not sure if he would have had the power/influence to create a musical and bring it to the broadway, if he hadn´t been so successfull in the years before.
IMO Paul Simon is the only musician who really wrote a musical, all these other bands just bring a greatest hits collection on stage, and - Surprise - it is a hit. A Simon&Garfunkel musical would sell a billion seats I guess, and ABBA, Queen and whoever can just look a little bit bored. But I would hate it, if Paul does that. |

 | Elton John is the only other one I can think of who wrote the music (not lyrics) for 3 successful musicals, Lion King, Aida and Billy Elliot. |

 | Lion King and the Capeman were both nominated in 1998 awards for best Original Score, neither won. Elton John shared credit for the music with 4 others. He was solely nominated for Aida and Billy Elliot for best Original Score.
I assume that musicals such as Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia, where music is not original and written for this play is not eligible for this award.
