I remember that years back I tried to search for that mysterious tape mentioned by Paul on the Graceland cover. It would be interesting to hear how the Graceland songs developed, and how much Paul just took and reinvented with some lyrics.
I never found this tape.

But today I got a link from the daily google newsletter, including a youtube track by the Boyoyo Boys.

Well, if you listen to that instrumental song, you get a good feeling how the track Gumboots developed.
Well, I was already humming the lyrics to that song...

You know what would have been an interesting release (when they released the digital remastered versions a few years back?) - a 1:1 album
Pauls songs vs. original songs

Yes, I have two CD´s from the Boyoyo Boys that they release in the 1980, which is in late career if I understand correctly their career.

It is very good, sounds very simple, but so sunny and shining !

With regard to Gumboots, you hear the original track in the background of the Episode No. 6 of the BBC Special on Paul´s career.

The Gumboots track that we know still sound a big rework from the original from what I can hear...

Live performance of Graceland on David Letterman 9/10/86 and also an interview after.Paul discusses the influence of African music on the album and Ray Phiri also comes in on the interview.
Interesting that no one knew at the time the huge impact it would have on the world.
i got the links from a blog posted by roboud on the S and g website.
here is the link

What fun to see those clips. Probably no one at that time knew what a huge hit Graceland would be. What a treat we all had in store for us.

a little interesting to hear how dismissive paul is about how he came by the original tape!

´ Gumboots - accordian jive hits vol 2 ´ - township jive from soweto

How about that. More great information from Brenda. I found it interesting that Gracelands "That Was Your Mother" is Zydeco style music.
zydeco is ´fast tempo and dominated by the button or piano accordion and a form of a washboard known as a "rub-board," "scrub-board," ... ´ (wikipedia)
Clifton Chenier was an eminent performer and recording artist of Zydeco.(wikipedia)
The lyrics are ´ Dancing to Zydeco´ ... ´Lafayette State of Louisiana, Dance to the music of Clifton Chenier, The King of the Bayou.´ etc
I Love to find out the background of the song. I loved the rhythm and the accordion in this song but the words usually don´t mean anything until you know some background.
He is so amazing to be able to produce such diverse music.

It took me quite a while to understand the link beween the last 2 tracks on Graceland and the rest of the album. The explanation came in one of the Graceland docs, where Paul explains that he made the link there with the US with the accordeon and Zydeco music.

I just heard the song "Graceland two
years ago as I had left rock and roll
for country for a long time. I still
think it has nothing to do with Elvis.
I had heard of the title, but I assumed
it was an Elvis song on one of his
later albums.
