 | Which trouble ! ... to read all these posts : only critics, about S&G and Paul as well ...
Can´t you simply enjoy what is offered, and be HAPPY to listen to Paul´s music "live" ???
YES, I Love Paul´s solo performances, but ALSO S&G together (I´m NOT shamed of it), and I am astonished by the sectarianism of some of you :-(
I find it marvelous that they plan to tour again (together or apart), and would be VERY happy if they come in Europe again :-)))
If not, I plan to cross the atlantic ocean ... ;-) ...for they will not do it for 20 more years ! |

 | I personaly showed a lot of respect last year and said it is fine, let them do their tour again, people in Australia and Japan also should get their show.
Now this seems to become the usual habit. Whatever, I will become quiet now, as other oppinions do not seem to be allowed by some fans, and on the other hand there comes nothing really exciting new from Paul. |

 | finally found the password to get in here!
I was pondering some of the statements and I find the whole S&G nostalgia on my part quite odd. I never saw them live nor to my memory, did I note seeing them on TV. Now I was a fan of the smothers brothers and the kraft music hall, so I guess it is likely I did, but it was "not a big deal" I guess that stayed in my memory. But I do remember Homeward Bound and singing and playing guitars with my friends and a very vivid recall of the BOTW on the radio. I loved the CP 1981 dvd when I got it about 2 years ago, and went to a few of Paul´s BAM concerts. And then I got to see them for 3-4 songs at the Beacon during Paul´s show. Seeing them standing together was thrilling-why I do not know. And face it, while you could hear the vestige of the famous harmony, it was not as good. If I wanted to hear the great harmony sound, better to stay at home and listen to cds. When I see the Eagles live it is not the same feeling-so it is not as simple as nostalgia for music of the past. Very confusing. |

 | What can Simon and Garfunkel bring us new ? Nothing at all. It´s just an Old dish they keep on reheating and serving us.
Is Paul´s talent so gone that he can´t give us anything new and exciting anymore ? I hope not.
I used to Love Simon and Garfunkel but I was then 13 years old and it was 27 years ago ! I think it´s far time for Paul to move with the times.
I give my seat for a S&G´s concert with much pleasure to the ones who love to surf on the nostalgy wave.

 | I think we should all respect Paul´s choice to do what he wants. He´s happy, alive and well, shouldnt that be good enough for his true fans? |

 | I think it is hard for the true fans who followed and enjoyed his solo career so much to see him become an oldies act, and that is what these tours with S&G will end up to if they last. Sure we are happy that Paul is happy, alive and well but that doesn´t mean we have to give up our dream for another (hopefully fantastic) solo album. For us it is sad that Paul cannot resist the public demand for S&G.

 | What is the normal "pace" for PS for an album since 1986?
Graceland - 1986
ROS - 1991
Capeman - 1996
YTO - 1999
Surprise - 2006.
That is 5 albums in 20 years. 2006 + 4 is... 2011 :)

 | Hey well said Ans (and Bodo, and Nath, etc.)
But I guess I need to be fair too. Simon, even solo, has become since Suprise a nostalgia show too. I mean...when people get excited by Me and Julio and Graceland, we are in the deep past as well. The sole consolation in the solo tour is the fact that the band is incredible, colourful reinterpretation of classics or recent tunes, etc. ! As for S&G shows, it is pretty much the same dish.
One comment/question though for people who are not in agreement with my school of thought. It is important to remember that Graceland was done when Simon´s career was in a commercial cul-de-sac. Had he pursued the nostalgia tours with Artie, I do not know what would have happened to him. Maybe he would have done it later, but probably not.
But a project like Graceland was worth refusing to continue the S&G history, on stage and in studio ?
Absolutely !
So it is something important to keep in mind facing the present time... |

 | Thanks Mog :)
I think almost every artist who has a long career becomes in some way a nostalgia show.
Paul said about the hit songs in an tv interview in 2006, you have to kind of drag the Old hits along in your shows because the audience expects them to be performed.
I always liked how Paul and the band changed the classics. I agree he could have done some more songs from Surprise in 2006 and 2008 but the shows were still incredible beautiful for me. And the shows I attended at BAM 2008 were also fantastic, very good renditions from artists
like Luciana Souza, David Byrne, Gillian Welch etc. and Paul himself with LBM and guest percussionist Cyro Baptista were a great experience. I prefer the nostalgia solo shows way over the S&G shows ;-)

 | My opinion is that songs like The Boxer, Homeward Bound, Sound of Silence, America are brilliant but chances are I can hear these at a solo show (Art´s voice does not improve these songs any for me).
The fact is that I would rather listen to The Boy In The Bubble, Graceland, Cool Cool River, Diamonds, Me and Julio and Father & Daughter than Leaves That Are Green, At The Zoo, Baby Driver, Feelin´s Groovy and El Condor Pasa (irrespective of how great those songs are).
My dream would be that they tour (like the 1993 shows) with a short opening set of Art´s solo hits followed by some S&G songs followed by a main set of PS songs finishing with and encore of S&G songs.
Something like (and excuse my list but I just use my own preference as an example):
Art Solo Set (including Bright Eyes, Heart in New York etc.)
Art introduces Paul...
Old Friends/Bookends
Hazy Shade of Winter
I Am A Rock
Mrs Robinson
Scarborough Fair
Art leaves the stage...
The Boy in the Bubble
Mother & Child Reunion
Another Galaxy
Graceland
Born At The Right Time
Me and Julio
Cool Cool River
Questions For The Angels
Wartime Prayers
Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes
You Can Call Me Al
Hearts & Bones
Father & Daughter
Hurricane Eye
American Tune
Proof
Still Crazy After All These Years
Late In The Evening
Art is re-introduced
America
Homeward Bound
Bridge Over Troubled Water
Cecelia
The Boxer
Sound of Silence
Show ends.
I think that would be a great show - would please most people and would be worth the inflated entry price. |

 | I like your setlist a lot, Matthew. I only would go for "The Boxer" as the last song.
I am afraid, Art will not agree.

 | I guess we just have to agree to disagree or as Paul said it: "one man´s ceiling is another man´s floor". I can see both side of the issues. I still say that Paul would be putting out a new album if he could. I hope he is working on one! |

 | Ok my tuppence half pence worth. I Love all PS music and am interested in different versions even Arties. However I feel that the S&G yrs have made some of PS music into elevator music. One of the best findings I´ve had in the last few yrs was the PS songbook - which brought alive the S&G songs in a way the harmonies never could. I´ll go to Paul Simon no matter who he is with, but I much prefer solo. was listening to "some folks lives rolls easy" today, hair raising - could you imagine that being Art Garfunkled?
If only AG would accept that he is an accompaniment to PS and not an equal partner, then we could have concerts set as above (with some new PS music) and then we could stop these long (albeit interesting) threads about reunion tours. |

 | << BTW: I hope Paul soon gives an interview and tells us why he is on a S&G tour now. I just want to hear the reasons. >>
We should pose the question on our list of questions. It may just be a business decision. Must have mortgage, wages to pay, keep the musicians, roadies, management in jobs. |

 | ´If only AG would accept that he is an accompaniment to PS and not an equal partner´.
LOL !!!!
The thing is, in 2010, Garfunkel can tell Simon exactly what he told us in an interview in the 1980...which is something like:
- Paul, if you care about a Paul Simon record that will sell 500 000 copies, ok, fine, but a S&G album could sell millions !
LOL !!!
Actually, I am nostalgic of Paul´s pinnacle in early 1990. I mean...when I see these footages of the BATRT tour with people, from every continent, so happy they clap their joy with hands above their heads, I found this amazing !!
Nostalgia, nostalgia...can I buy this somewhere ? |
