 | Hello
Well, what comes with our Nikolaus (or Sinterklaas, as it is the same I think) are the Perchten.
Do you know them too Ans?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perchten
I was very afraid of them as a child. They come together with the Nikolaus, and if you did not behave well all year they are going to do beat you. Well, they never beated small children, but it could be very hurtfull if you are on the street and show them disrespect.
If you live in a bigger city like I do now, all these traditions get lost somehow. It is all mixed up and gone commercial, and the usual crowd on the streets of city tourists and immigrants is not really interested or connected with that thing. |

 | BTW. Scaary - how did you discover Lermoos?
Although I come from the same state, I never have been there before. It is a little bit off the track for us, closer to Germany than to Austria. But a good friend of mine comes from this area. |

 | The Perchten look awful, I can understand that kids are afraid of them. There are similarities with our Zwarte Piet (Black Pete) but they look nicer ;-) We had the same story, we had to be good all year to become a lot of presents. They told us Zwarte Piet saw everything and would tell Sinterklaas we were bad and he would write it down in his big book.

Each year they give figures about how much the population spends on Sinterklaas and they still spend a lot even during the crisis. It´s becoming more commercial these days, they have a lot of programs on TV. The nicest and oldest TV program is when Sinterklaas arrives in Holland with his big pakjesboot (presentboat) A big event where the Mayor of the city welcomes Sinterklaas, they make each year a nice story about the arrival, every year something goes wrong because of a stupid action from a Black Pete which is very funny for the kids :) They use good actors.

 | It was a long time since I heard Vendedor de Sonhos and I remembered I must have the complete song myself, after a search I found it. I´m glad you have it now Bodo.
At Youtube I just saw the version with Milton and James Taylor from 1988. Although James does a good job on it I prefer Paul and Milton´s version, Paul gives the song the right emotion and I like the harmonizing with Paul and Milton better as with Milton & James.

 | Hi Bodo, Lermoos is very popular with Irish hill walkers. My husband used to go there regularly when he was younger. The proximity to Munich made it very accessible and affordable 20-30 years ago when travel from Ireland was not as easy as it is today. |
