The clip is from Paul Simon´s 1977 Special and was broadcast as a spoof documentary.
The Paul Simon Special centres around Paul attemting to reherase some songs for a concert with the Special´s Producer causing no end of problems.
It was a comedy spoof written by Paul Simon and Lorne Michaels. Lorne created the infamous US Show Saturday Night Live, with its mix of comedy and live music. (Lorne also produced the first Simon and Garfunkel Reunion Concert in Central Park New York back in 1981.
The role of the mad producer on the show was played by Charles Grodin, and also featured a cameo by Chevy Chase. Lily Tomlin also apears as Paul´s support and freind during the show.
Music wise Paul attempts to perform songs with Toots Thielemans (Harmonica) and The Jessy Dixon Singers. Very Special guest Art Garfunkel also appears.
I got the DVD found it in Tower Records Dublin a couple of years ago for the princely sum of 7 Euro. Was a bit bewildered at first I thought it was a scam. didn´t know what to make of it! but its great!
Someone have have uploaded the hole Special to YouTube, just write there "Paul Simon Special" and you´ll find it.
I was intrested on buying it but wasn´t able to find it in reasonable price.
Does anyone knows a place where they have the DVD and have deliveries?
It´s definately official,. I remember Rhino Video releasing it in the states a few years ago, and I could never get a hold of a copy despite pre-ordering it... I wonder why it is so rare?
I ordered mine from fnac.com , and I think it was delivered from Australia then. They sold it for 6.99 Euros just after the release, really very cheap.
And it looks so cheap that I really doubt it is official. The cover is 1 thin paper, with the cheapes plastic box you can imagine. (These selfmade DVDS with your own jewel boxes look like that)
