 | Just some complements to my theory:
Surprise is indeed a collaborative work, but not that much. I think Eno worked on it for about 20 days...Eno was used more as a person to enhance sonically material that Simon had been working on by himself, or he came up with sounds that gave Simon something to react to.
The Capeman was also a collaboration, more specifically with Walcott on lyrics. But the project is entirely Simon´s in my mind, for various reasons. Also, contrary to Graceland or ROTS, I have the feeling that almost all the music from The Capeman is really from Simon, that he actually sweated on what you hear. He really wrote 30 something music piece and songs for it. One can infer this when seing the ´A Roll of the Dice´ doc.
Anyway, I can go on like this on reflections. Bottom line I would say is when Simon has an entourage of brilliant musicians around him, he could produce fantastic things.
On his own, he has still fantastic writing skills, but the appeal of the outcomes might be clear for fewer people. One exception to this, unresolved case is SCAATY.
For the rest, I think the theory woks quite well. | | | | Bodo

 | Hi Mog
I have to say I am not sure about how much Eno contributet to the songs, but I always have the feeling it is much more - and in matters of time I don´t think you can rank that. Paul is just a super-slow-worker.
When we heard the first rumours about a new PS album (I talk about Surprise now) I often read that Paul was working on more guitar based songs, like in the 70´s, simply but beautiful tunes. Like Wartime prayers when he does it live with just a guitar. So - I have a feeling that a lot of these songs have been written in that style, and did not include ANY sonic landscapes or whatever. (or listen to the part in ´Thats me´ when Paul begins to sing: first Love opens like a flower)
IMO these are Pauls genuine work. All the electronic sounds come from Eno - some are subtile, just a electronic beat "bumm ba bumm ba bumm ba": BUT - they have a main influence on the song. While, let´s say the contribution from the Everly brothers to Graceland is just zero IMO.
I just think that because I never have heard in an interview that Paul started working on electronic sounds alone - and the sound is so Eno typical, while it is complete Simon-untypically.

 | About Capeman - this was any way much more a collaboration then YTO, H&B or even Surprise IMO.
A contribution to your theory:
I think the best albums are created, when you have a different collaboration on every song.
But hey, on the other hand Pauls most successfull Album was Bridge, and he has written all these songs alone.

 | "Pauls most successfull Album was Bridge, and he has written all these songs alone."
Well, "Bye Bye Love" and "El Condor Pasa" wasn´t written by him. And didn´t he have another "collaborator" on that album? ;-) | | | | Bodo

 | Also true Hakan (although I guess you could delete Bye Bye Love from the album, and it would have had the same success I guess)
Another collaborator hm... not sure... didn´t he make a movie at that time and wasn´t available? ;)

 | Humm...I think you convinced me that my theory does not work.
It is true that the collaboration with Eno on Suprise is part of the record everywhere, except for F&D. And let´s not forget that Eno is credited for 3 songs with Paul, which tells a lot. I remember that Outrageous came up after Simon thrown away a song they had been working on, that Eno did not like. Another Galaxy was formed after Eno pressed Simon to play ´anything´ on the guitar.
YTO, for me, was collaboration. The tracks were formed in the studio with a percussion-based approach with Shehan, Hadad, etc. Then, the guitars part came...it might be an example with Simon arriving in the studio with nothing on paper.
The Capeman, I dunno. He did work with a lot of people on it (the cast, Oscar Hernandez), no doubt. But, maybe it it wrong to assume it, but it remains in my mind a project that is Simon´s from start to end.
Anyway, the theory does not work.
But is the one from Bodo working ? I need more details Bodo ! | | | | Erwin

 | Wel, it looks like Art will go on tour again in 2010. On his website you can read that concerts are in the works for 2010. Only in the USA i think......
I hope Paul will do the same and that he goes on tour! | | | | |
