Nick from Widnes England Writes:

When I was 12 maybe 13 I first started to learn to play guitar, because I heard a guy on holiday playing an acoustic version of Bridge Over Troubled Water and I was semi hooked.

Now age 38 I am still playing guitar, my favourite Paul Simon tune to play is "Me & Julio Down By The School Yard"

I do not claim to be a fantastic player just struming for fun. I curently own eight guitars, four acoustic and four electric. My Fav acoustic is my Ephiphone SQ180 Signature Don Everly , its blac has star inllays on fret board, double wingned pick guards and play very good. I play a lot of Paul Simon acoustic, Everly, Dylan, acoustic blues on it.

My fav electric is a 1989 Fender Eric Clapton Signature Stratocaster finished in Pewter with Gold Lace Sensor Pick Ups. It has the Clapton sound to die for.

The reason and still is that I started my guitar journey was and is Paul Simon. I may never play note of note like the master but hey I have fun.

Ok how many others here play guitar fancy sharing your passion for the instrument. What guitar do you own and what Paul Simon songs do you guys play?

Over to you guys!

Hey Nick,Gary Stewart here. I too started playing guitar after listening to Paul Simon : ) I´m a singer/songwriter full time now, thanks to Simon and my music is influenced heavily by him. If Bodo and co will forgive me for plugging, you can hear some of my songs at http://www.myspace.com/garystewartband. Ans has heard some of my music and like it!! As for guitars,I started out playing my dad´s right-handed fenix acoustic backwards(i´m left-handed),then bought myself a cheap yamaha FG,which I did a lot of busking on. I then managed to buy the Paul Simon black jumbo replica model, but had serious intonation problems,as it was a right-handed guitar and I had to re-string it. It was never the same after I dropped it in it´s softcase :( My favourite guitar was my 21st birthday present from my dad-A Tanglewood. Although not expensive,it had a great tone and amplified, sounded like a dream. I currently use a Martin DM,which has a really warm tone and has served me well so far : )

Nice to geek out guitar-wise with you Nick-I hope this doesn´t bore the other readers!!

Cheers!!

Gary

No doubt the forum who read this will correct me.

Hi Nick, I believe it is true!

I started playing guitar because of a Love for PS tunes. The first song I learned was Slip Slidin´ Away, then Kathy´s Song and Leaves That Are Green... I love the finger style in the latter two, but Slip Slidin´ always has me strumming happily away! Scarborough Fair is one of my favourite finger style pieces too...

I play a Taylor 210e and a Takamine G-Series Cutaway, both with custom light strings...

Oh, and I still have a LOT to learn!

there are some tom waits songs, like I Hope That I Don´t Fall In Love With YOu, On The Nickle, and Time, that are really easy to play, 3 or 4 chords, and much simpler finger Patterns that Paul uses, good starter songs, the chords can easily be found on the internet, fun to sing too

I put a new demo up last week if you want to have a listen-it´s called Liar Liar-uses the Travis Picking style that Simon used a lot in his S and G days...

I started playing guitar about 7 years ago because my brother and my friend both played...but Paul Simon has definitely been an inspiration to me; the only reason I stuck with playing at times was because I really wanted to be able to play his songs. The first one I learned was "Bookends." Now I can also play "Sounds Of Silence," "Sparrow," and "The Only Living Boy In New York" (plus a bunch of other songs by other artists). I´m not a great player and it´s all just for fun. Although I´m fairly decent at fingerpicking, many of Paul´s songs are still too daunting for me to try to play.

Hi Nick !
I play the guitar since I was very young.I started playing like almost everybody....four or five chords and that was all. Then an album came to my life :THE PAUL SIMON SONG BOOK. I felt in Love with each and every song of this album and I swear to myself one day I´d play those songs....
Then , a friend of mine showed me that Paul Simon´s usual fingerpicking....It changed my world and I was the luckiest boy in the world because I was able to play the songs more or less like Paul Simon!!

I have 4 acoustic guitars.Three of them are 6 strings and the other is a 12 EPIPHONE string guitar.

The song I always start to play when I hav a guitar betwen my hands is Kathy´s Song. It´s my very first favourite song....

Hey!,

2 weeks ago I get one of Paul rare black Yamaha acoustic guitars. The same model Paul used ´91 in Central Park.

The guitar is manufactured in 87 and limited. I don´t know the right number. I think there exists circa 50 Paul Simon yamahas.

The guitar has an excellent pick up system (29 years Old) but some scratches.

I´m so glad and its great to play Pauls instrument.

cheers

I really Love to play fingerstyle.

I started to play with easy picking songs. (The Boxer, SOS ...)

The hardest Song I know is Hearts And Bones.

Its just amazing who Paul played it 91 in CP without a real band. Just his voice and the guitar. Its my fav. Song.

10 months ago I started to play some Jazz. I love to play all One Trick Pony songs. great album ;-)

I love his handling with rhytems.

Paul is an excellent singer/songwriter AND guitarist.
