 | I am not sure if you have read that, but Leonard Cohne just collapsed at one of his shows in Italy. The man is now 74 years Old, and maybe touring is too much for him now.
This just made me realize how fast this can happen, and how old Paul is now (and Scaaty asked if I am sure they will tour in 2060 ;) )
But what do you think? Will Paul stop touring in 2-3 years?
Or will he die on stage, like Miriam Makeba? (also not really old...73 or what)
Thats just a few years now for him, if you think that way.
But on the other hand, Paul had always much more energy on stage, than Leonard Cohen (who looked even boring 17 years ago), and Miriam Makeba also had some health problems in the last years (when I saw her in 2003 she already could only sing for around 70 minutes.

 | Leonard Cohen´s collapse was due to food poisoning or indigestion depending on what you read. He has a different type of energy on stage - have you ever seen him Bodo. He is v ery supple and certainly can move but in a more deliberate fashion.
Certainly hope that Paul has many more years left - frank Sinatra went on til about 80.
Last night I had to collect 2 girls from a pop concert - they were in great form and thoroughly enjoyed themselves, seeing their idol who is of similar age to them.
Both girls (one my mother) have recently celebrated their 73rd birthdays and had just seen Cliff Richard!! |

 | Bodo wrote: "Paul had always much more energy on stage, than Leonard Cohen (who looked even boring 17 years ago)". What a strange remark on such a great artist! Reminds me of some of the nasty remarks made on Paul through the years from people that probably are not very interested... |

 | First, Cohen has 75, not 74. Secondly, he´s in an incredible shape, compared to hoe he was (as a singer) 10, 20 or 35 years. He´s got a kind of limpidity you can see absolutely rarely. I am really not a "fan" of Cohen (neither as singer-songwriter, neither as writer / poet) and hesitated a lot before going to see him this year in a live concert - but it was absolutely worth the pain and more. Forget Cohen and check the band (every single band-member) and you realize it is something unique happening with Cohen et Co.
Check out the London 2009 DVD (about 3 hours) and I´m pretty sure you´ll run to buy his tickets, especially if you´re thinking this is most probably his last tour or so.
To summarize: Cohen is not like Simon, who´s been constantly growing for the last 40 years or so, Cohen had an absolutely incredible blossoming only last years (especially with his 2008 World-Tour - being forced to organize this tour after being left without a penny in his pocket by his former manager). And - I repeat myself - he´s in a sort of "state of grace", and in a great shape, both spiritually and physically.
I just can hope Simon will be in this shape at his 75th year! (BTW, see what Simon commented last year after attending Cohen´s concert in Europe).
Cheers, |

 | to be pedantic - he was 74 when he collapsed he is now 75, his birthday is this week. But yes Leonard Cohens live show is something not to be missed. I saw him first time last year - and was worried that I´d find the show tedious - It certainly wasn´t, and when he came back to Dublin this year I went again and wasn´t disappointed. |

 | "What (will) you do when you`re not a kid anymore and you still want to Rock and Roll", Rolling Stone wrote about One-trick pony in 1980.
The same year Simon told "Melody Maker" (along with "New Musical Express" one of the two famous music-papers in the Uk then): "So far I have devoted my whole life to music."
In another US-magazine there was a nice photo with him an Count Basie.
"For Paul Simon being invited backstage by the Count was an honour which turned into a mutual-admiration session between the 76-year-Old jazz giant and pop`s trickiest pony. When Simon, 39, asked Basie how long he plans to keep up the beat, the Count replied: "Until the end, like Duke Ellington and Satchmo."
I´ll send something to Bodo, he will decide whether/how/where to upload. |

 | Hm... my guess is you all seem to missunderstand me a little bit. I didn´t want to say anything bad about Mr. Cohen, I am a fan too, since many years I bring up his name here.
But I think you can not ignore the fact that Mr. Cohen looks older/moves slower and is more like a 74 sorry 75 year Old, than Paul at this age now.
And that is what I meant, Paul is IMO in a better shape, doin sports and other things.
I see Paul playing the electric guitar during Me and Julio, while Cohen...well whatever, that was really not the point of my posting.
The point was: What will Paul do in 4-5 years.
And I am really sorry to mixed up this important fact of Cohen beeing 75, not 74. That makes him much older and so it is understandable that he collapsed on stage ;-)
BTW: This story about the bad food was written in the newspapers here, thats right. But it was written as if this was just a excuse from his management. I think in such a business you never hear the truth.
I was shocked to read this, and I realized Paul is not far away from that age. While he makes us believe he is around 50 years old.

 | Hi Bodo,
the essential in what I wrote wasn´t his date of birth (I wrote four words about this subject), so you´re repeating the numbers too much.
What I wrote was about: Cohen is in greater form than ever (the "real" Cohen is the 74-75 years Old Cohen, not the 35 or 55 years old), see also Simon´s words from last year: "Have you seen Cohen last night? It was amazing, amazing!" Cohen did NOT look older than sixty and a bit two weeks ago when I saw him live. Actually did not look older than Simon in his last live appearance together with Steve Martin...
And yes, I am also like "fingers crossed" for at least 2-3 more Simon albums and as many lice concerts as possible... |

 | Lol such a funny discussion. Well Paul is in GREAT shape imo. Look at the latest photos from the Health Care Reform event - he looks fantastic, and I think he´s finally gotten a good stylist (or maybe Edie´s helped him with a wardrobe makeover :)) So I think as long as he keeps on making new music, he will keep on doing tours. But I don´t think he will do retrospective tours like many other artists, that´s for S&G, not Paul Simon as a solo artist.
Leonard Cohen was here earlier this year I think. I didn´t see him and I still wonder whether my primary school teacher did - she was apparently a huge fan and passed away from cancer a few weeks after the Cohen tours. I only really found out about his music at her funeral. |
