 | "I am entitled by my birth to the treasures of the earth, no one must be denied these, no one must be denied"
If you believe in a loving God, you can spend the rest of your life thinking about these lines. Are they true? If so, why doesn´t reality conform?
I think about this all the time.

 | Maybe we need to earn some of the treasures of the earth. Maybe some don´t deserve them.... |

 | What are the treasures of the earth - gold? diamonds? oil? treasures which only feed into mans greed esp the developed world who feel they are entitled to these treasures wherever they are. Or is it clean water, fertile soil and clean air which is required by every living thing and should be available freely to everybody- Personally I think that is what Paul Simon is referring to. Again mankind´s greed is robbing these treasures by pollution, excessive farming and damming water for power. |

 | Yes,Paul was thinking of the ecological things, clean water, etc, etc. He had hoped it might be taken up as an anthem by some ´Greenpeace´ type organization. It sounded great live in 1983. He introduced it as a new song, which it was,and it was immediately catchy, beautiful, and I hoped it would be on the Hearts And Bones(Think too Much) album that was released later that year, but of course it wasn´t. I think it´s still a great song. I Love the sound of Paul´s voice on this song, and it always reminds me of that wonderful February night in 1983:-) |
