I was just sat here thinking about Hearts And Bones and I am still in awe of that album 25 years on! I particularly Love ´Think too much (b)´ ´And in the night my father came to me, held me to his chest...´ wow, so beautiful! And even ´When Numbers Get Serious,´ And after all is said and done, and the numbers all come home...´ For me, it ranks among his greatest solo work, quite a claim to make I know, but I just love it. Any thoughts, or have I done this one to death????!!!!

I´m with you dude... My all time favourite album from any artist ever...

Hearts And Bones is my favourite track, followed by all the rest, but I agree, Think Too Much (b) is a real gem. Simple and quiet in it´s retrospective. Lovely.

When Numbers Get Serious is a light hearted ´sounding´ song, but I think it´s very profound. "Divided we multiply, exchanging with ease". Poetic genius.

Hearts And Bones is one of Paul Simons best songs ever, and think to much(b) is a major work. I also like Rene and Train In The Distance and Laye Grate, in some how the album to me don´t match his best. A week 4 out of five

H and B is one of my very favorite albums, and the song is also one of my favorite Paul Simon songs. I like everything on the album - even "Cars Are Cars" as much as I hate to admit it.

I think that H&B contains some of Simon´s best songs, especially lyrically.

Even if the album has been a flop, some stellar songs from the record emerge and are still played live (e.g. Train In The Distance).

Musically, this album has not aged very well with the tracks that rely strongly on ´80 synthetisers.

Cars Are Cars is an embarassement for Simon himself and Roy Halee (was he the engineer?), so no need to expand on that. Not the kind of track you want one to listen to convert him/her to Paul´s music...

I have always loved Think Too Much (b) as well ! You kind of wonder what sounds you are hearing...animals, sheep ?

And I play Song About The Moon when I want to motivate myself to do something, and stop procrastinate...

´Presto, write a song about the moon´ !

Hearts And Bones in my opinion is Simon´s best album. Think Too Much (b), Train In The Distance and Hearts and Bones are three songs that will forever be woven indelibly into my heart and my brain. This, lyrically and emotionally, was his best work hands down.

I think H&B is the single one PS album that has lost some of its original quality with the passing of time. The songs are of course still great (mostly) and the lyrics, but I´m talking the about the production, which in some aspects are very "1980´s". "Train in a Distance", "Cars Are Cars", "When Numbers Get Serious" and "Think to Much (b)" are the most obvious examples of this.

His other albums are almost impossible to know when they were recorded (if you didn´t know), but this one is truly a child of the 1980´s.

"Allergies" and "Hearts And Bones" are my 2 all time favorites. I also Love his background work on "Song About The Moon". It is just an amazing album.

I Love how the sentiment of Cars Are Cars is picked up again in Cool, cool River. I can never truly express how I feel about this album or how it moves me but perhaps the best way is to relate it to a song, namely, ´Song About The Moon.´ It is, without doubt, a pick me up song, but at the same time there is something very dark about it. A little like Think too much (b) there is darkness but hope in familiar things, family, friends. The more I think about it, the more it seems that this is the feeling of each of the songs, a feeling of regret but a hope ´that life could be better,´ Oh Paul, sheer genius!

Out of his solo catalog, H&B and OTP have always been kind of ´dated´ in my mind.

Graceland remains without wrinkles for me.

Some sounds in ROTS transpire their age, but very little.

And his 3 first records are timeless classics in my mind !

Hearts And Bones is very definitely a favourite of mine. I think that because it was the first new Paul Simon album released after I became a fan it has a special significance, personally. I became a fan in 1982-The most recent studio album then was OTP,which was two years Old by that point. I concur with the comments regarding ´Think Too Much(b)´. ´When Numbers Get Serious´ has some beautiful clever lines-´I will Love you innumerably, you can count on my word, when times are mysterious, serious numbers will always be heard´. Whew, great stuff!

Just a thought... I only just realised how the verse you quoted should be read Ian. I´ve always thought it was ´when times are mysterious, serious / numbers will always be heard´ - but your version is the one in the lyrics book and it´s funny how the meaning changes... not that I´ve ever thought very much about what those particular lines mean anyway! Any suggestions?

But really... what a poet. I wish we had more songwriters of the same calibre.

Serious Numbers is the song I have made into the ringtone on my phone.

Hearts & Bones (the album) is also right up there as the best for me (especially the lyric writing). An album boasting Hearts & Bones, Train In The Distance, and Renee & Georgette just can´t be bad. I still play it often (more than Graceland).

For me Graceland is more dated now than ROTS (which for me is his creative peak).

Also agree with the comment about the 3 1970´s albums as being timeless. Dusting them off for a listen after a time on the shelf for me is just like listeing for the first time all over again.

Actually one of the real qualities of most of his albums is how even after multiple playings there always seems to be some subtle new information and interpretation to be discovered.
This is because his music is full of restless questioning, contraditions, and mutliple meanings. And his drawing on new musical influences and collaborations has always been with genuine empathy and Love of the music.

Graceland as dated ? Really ?

It seems to me as if it was suspended in the sky, shining forever.
