In the ´Late Great Johnny Ace,´ Paul says a stranger told him about John Lennon´s death and they then went to a bar together and ´closed the place,´ is that a true story?

Yes,that is something I have always wanted to know too Damo. In my opinion Paul is describing an actual event, nothing imagined. Those types of truths are sprinkled all through his catalogue. Like when he sings ´I remember a best friend turned enemy´-I don´t know who he means, but I feel it´s a fact. However,a line like ´Hey Senorita, thats astute´ I said ´Why don´t we get together and call ourselves an institute´ would be an invented line for that songs character. Later in that same song though when he sings ´You are the burden of my generation,I sure do Love you,so let´s get that straight´,he was probably thinking of Harper...maybe,I don´t know? But yes,I´m certain he had some drinks with a stranger on the cold sad night that JWL was murdered.

The best friend turned enemy is Artie right Ian?? Didn´t they have another big fight in 93? I remember Paul referring to it as "ego stuff" in a later interview, I think one from when Surprise was first released

Artie?? Could be Nikki. It´s strange that I had never considered him. I guess I always assumed that they had had brotherly spats frequently over many years, that 1993 wouldn´t require special mention. 1993 though, was when they did the Paramount shows wasn´t it? So they would have been spending a lot of time together, and affording them every chance to get under each other´s skin. Does anyone else have an idea who this ´best friend turned enemy´ might have been-Artie,his partner in arguments these many years,or someone we´ve not yet considered....?

It was after that fight with Art that they didn´t speak again for 10 years. They made up again in 2003 when they were given the Grammy Life Time Achievement Award.

So...did Paul mention what they fought about that would have kept them from speaking for 10 years??

the ´hey Senorita...institute´ line refers to his marriage (institute) to Carrie Fisher. He said in an interview once that she was getting frustrated about not getting married and they were fighting a lot over this issue...he had misgivings about the marriage and was unfortunately right since they didn´t stay married long

Speaking about the original topic again - I always was wondering too about this line. You know, as a big fan you might think this should happen to yourself one day ;-)
But I do not think that this happened in reality - a stranger comes to you, tells you that John Lennon died, and you go into a bar with him...? Well, maybe he went to a bar, was listening to some music there, but I think this story has also some fiction in it.
